Yes Shinto is still very much observed but mainly just for ceremonies such as before the erection of new houses or buildings, funerals, births and weddings of course. People will visit shrines to pray and ask for something, whether it be for a son or daughter’s spot in a prestigious university or that their children do well in exams. They often write their requests on special paper and tie them to the tree branches in the shrine compound. On the subject of nudity in Japan, this is the country where people love to bathe and there are communal bath houses known as SENTO all over Japan. In every city and rural town people without their own bathrooms or people who might just want to socialize go to the public baths to strip off and chat. Japan is a country of constant volcanic activity, so hot natural springs, known as ONSEN have all been very popular for as long as anyone can remember. The Japanese people are not at all repressed or embarrassed about nudity and if the law here prohibits hundreds of naked bodies parading through the streets, causing a commotion or traffic jams, then so be it. I live here, I abide by their laws.
