I had another thought…amazing, isn’t it! 🙂 If the OWS movement agrees to a national strike/march on Washington, DC this coming Spring, I think that media coverage will be key to its success. Use your best and most talented writers to begin putting press releases together. Granted, it’s too early to put it out now, but the time will go quickly. After all, it’s only about 60 days before the first primaries. IMO, announcing it about 6 weeks prior to the date would be good, giving people time to make their travel arrangements. Periodic releases should also be done up until the time of the protest. In the beginnings of OWS, it was sad to see the MSM completely ignoring the story. I believe that this time, they will not be able to relegate it to the back page. There is too much public involvement and interest in the story now. If we can get a million people to the Mall in DC, I don’t see how the news channels can hide their heads in the sand. But it may take some pushing to get it into the prime time lineup. I hope that the criticism that they’ve taken about the discrepancy between coverage of the Teabaggers and the OWS will shame them into helping to publicize it. And one other point, I don’t know how money is being handled by the various sites, but would it be possible to form a national fund? This might be problematic, but what I’m thinking is for a national advertising push. Perhaps MoveOn.org or DFA could help. Get the issues before the voters. Timing will be crucial with primaries coming up in the late winter and early spring. I know that there is some resistance to supporting any candidates by the movement as a whole, but as I said yesterday, legislative changes must take place. It will be up to those we elect to make those changes. As much as some would stay out of the political fray, it is imperative that OWS supports and endorses those candidates who will put the needs of the people ahead of those corporate interests. It will soon be time to do that and the movement should consider the choices. There is such a sad feeling in this country now that our government has completely failed us. But if we are to effect those changes we want, we must depend on the system that we have. Side-stepping it will accomplish nothing but worn shoe-leather and soggy rain-soaked slogans. We have to work with what we have. Political involvement is imperative by the movement at large in the coming months. I’m just sayin’… Hope you are making progress! This one is to amend the Constitution, taking away “corporate personhood”! Now, that I can definitely support. I also noticed Bito’s inclusion of an article about President Obama doing what he can to counter the terrible influence of the Citizens United case on our elections. It ain’t all that…as we say down here in the South, but it’s something. At least, he’s trying! President Obama’s executive order would prohibit any contractor from making donations while engaged in negotiating and carrying out government contracts. From a legal standpoint, it really has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Of course, we will hear howls, not from werewolves roaming our towns, but from the repubs who will attack PBO as a dictator! I can write the script! We’re proud of you! 🙂 I’ve given this some thought since you mentioned it on Vox Pop last night. First, I agree with everyone else here…absolute NON-VIOLENCE needs to be the first rule for all! What happened in Oakland has shown how quickly things can get out of control. While public opinion is with the Occupy Oakland protesters now, it can turn just as quickly if they are seen breaking windows and vandalizing property. Also, the respective general assemblies need to do what they can to get a handle on drugs and alcohol at the various sites. This is one of the RW’s favorite ways to demonize the protesters and another way for the MSM to ridicule the movement. Second, the agenda must be clear, succinct, and perhaps only several messages/demands. Get lobbying money out of Congress, for example. This is one of my pet peeves. It must also be a demand that legislative action can be taken on. Otherwise, it is just chanting bumper-sticker slogans in the streets. I have my own agenda but I’m sure the general assemblies can do better. But “redistribute the wealth” is not going to do much, if you catch my drift. Third, as the weather turns bad, I think it’s imperative that a presence be maintained in the major cities. I am appalled that Bloomberg has removed the people’s generators and heating supplies in New York. Make a national call now for sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, heavy clothing, etc. to see the people through the cold. Have these shipped to a post office box that can be rented for the movement very cheaply…or a UPS store in the area. Last, call for a national strike. Not now, necessarily, but perhaps when Spring rolls around. There will be time to organize and to recruit. The action should be centered in Washington. It is fine that OWS in New York and other cities are vibrant and growing, but Washington is where the “fat cats” need to feel the pressure. Put out a call for everyone to go to Washington on the appointed day. If the civil rights folks could do it in the 60’s, I know it can be done now. I’d love to see a million people or more on the Mall in front of the Capitol Building! Otherwise, our esteemed “leaders” in DC just give lip service to the movement. They need to SEE it and FEEL it! We need to be in their faces! In fact, if there is a march on Washington, I’ll be there, health issues permitting! While in Washington, a delegation of the 99% should present legislative demands to Congress. Ask for pro bono legal work to get them ready. DEMANDS, no requests! It would be a good idea to check the working schedule of Congress to make damned sure they would be there and in session. They don’t work very many days, you know! They need to SEE the people on their doorstep! Meetings with various Congressmen should be scheduled to reinforce the people’s message. Don’t let them slide out the back door and avoid facing the people! I believe that the American people will continue to support the movement and will respect the protesters who are so dedicated to the cause. Mitch McConnell has been lobbying to get his alma mater, Louisville into another conference or something like that! While 1 in 5 children are hungry in this country, these buffoons are arguing about college football, spending their time on ridiculous issues that have NOTHING whatsoever to do with JOBS for the people! I AM SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW AT THESE ASSHOLES!!! HOW DARE THEM!!! Now, Joe Manchin, Senator from West Virginia, is calling for HEARINGS in Congress about McConnell’s putting political pressure to get his school moved…or something like it. MY GOD IN HEAVEN!!!
