Sue, you know the rethugs would oppose this! They would pull out all the ridicule and hyperbole they could muster to say how “un-American” it was. It doesn’t benefit the corporations so therefore, it has to be done away with! Those damned librul socialists and their bright ideas! How dare they suggest that people should be secure??!!

And if Ron Christie with his snotty comments about the protesters was not bad enough, Reverend Al just played a clip from the other Village Idiot, Glenn Beck, who said that the OWS people will “drag you into the streets and kill you”!! He repeated his paranoid charge several times in that clip!

ADDENDUM: I am trying to get that link, but when I Googled GB, I found that I have to “join”…no way, no how!! Sorry but I do have my principles! 🙂

Why does Ron Christie have to come on that show and make a total ass out of himself?? He really attacked the protesters at OWS as “having sex, doing drugs”, etc. He said they ALL SHOULD GO GET A JOB!! What an asshat!! I cannot tolerate that man!

I personally hope that the repubs keep attacking! IMO, this is a bad strategical mistake on their part. They just simply don’t get it! They will help the Democrats if they keep it up!

Ssshhhh! Don’t tell them I said that! 🙂

Bito, I have been seeing some of Kalima’s articles on MB about the things that are happening in the UK. It almost sounds like some kind of weird echo-chamber of what’s happening here, just for a much smaller number of people who are effected.

Agreed, KT! This is taking a lot for granted though. We have to make sure PBO gets his second term and then hands off the reins to a good, strong progressive! We have a lot of work to do! I am deathly afraid of a repub win in 2012!!

KT, I like your idea about Feingold running in 2016! I have been wondering just who the Democratic Party would put up for the nomination. He seems like a very good choice although there will be some who see him as too progressive. I would certainly support him. Too bad he lost that last election to a teabagger…that could either hurt him or help him. Too early to tell at this point.

Hi Sue! Thanks for posting this. I have never read it before and was unaware that FDR ever wrote anything so profound! I use the word profound” because it goes to the very core of our principles of economic fairness and justice in this country. It does not have “fancy” language and big words, but is clear and succinct!

It is a sad state of affairs that we seem to have gone backwards in this country since FDR wrote this. I am sure if he were alive today, he would be appalled at the state of the economy and how the poorest of the poor are living. We have so much work to do!

Hi cyrano! Thanks for posting this. I read the article that Chris Hedges wrote and thought it was most informative about the workings of the “general assembly” and how the group keeps some organization among themselves.

Mr. Hedges wrote in his article about why the elites don’t get it. I thought this was very telling…

“This is a goal the power elite cannot comprehend. They cannot envision a day when they will not be in charge of our lives. The elites believe, and seek to make us believe, that globalization and unfettered capitalism are natural law, some kind of permanent and eternal dynamic that can never be altered. What the elites fail to realize is that rebellion will not stop until the corporate state is extinguished. It will not stop until there is an end to the corporate abuse of the poor, the working class, the elderly, the sick, children, those being slaughtered in our imperial wars and tortured in our black sites. It will not stop until foreclosures and bank repossessions stop. It will not stop until students no longer have to go into debt to be educated, and families no longer have to plunge into bankruptcy to pay medical bills. It will not stop until the corporate destruction of the ecosystem stops, and our relationships with each other and the planet are radically reconfigured. And that is why the elites, and the rotted and degenerate system of corporate power they sustain, are in trouble. That is why they keep asking what the demands are. They don’t understand what is happening. They are deaf, dumb and blind.”

If the movement wants a manifesto, this could be it!

Hi KT! I would have to agree with you. This guy’s heart may be in the right place, but I wouldn’t want to run into him in a dark alley!

I had the same feeling about the protesters who put on the zombie make-up and trudged down the street. It gave the movement a bad image IMO. It trivialized it, giving the MSM just more ammo to criticize.

Kalima, Bloomberg is nothing but a super-rich corporatist! He still has not figured out that ordering arrests of the peaceful protesters in New York City is only going to inspire others to join and continue the marches. He should be very, very careful…the next march could be to Gracie Mansion!

KT, I can handle a little policy fanaticism, but it’s the religious fanatics that are really the most dangerous! We would do well not to underestimate their influence on our lawmakers. They have some big numbers and big money on their side…and god forbid any repub goes against their agenda!(no pun intended) They will find themselves ostracized by the religious nutcases.

BREAKING NEWS: The FEC has just ruled to allow PAC money to be joined with Super-PAC money, allowing MORE undisclosed, anonymous donors to influence our elections!!

We are losing this battle! You all know the old adage, “Money talks, Bullsh*t walks!” That certainly seems to be the rule in Washington!!

KT, when pigs can fly! I’m idealistic too, but you know what results that would bring…repubs coming out in droves. I do think that many legislators come to Washington with high ideals, to fairly represent their constituents. But the long line of lobbyists with big, fat checks in their pockets are the rule rather than the exception. Perhaps the 2 year term for Congress is too short. They spend all their time figuring out how to raise money and hold on to their seats instead of working for the people.

Dylan Ratigan just today presented signatures from more than 140,000 people to “Get Money Out” of our political process to Dick Durbin…a drop in the bucket. But I hope and pray that this and the OWS protests will somehow reach critical mass to bring about the changes that we want. Outlawing lobbying money would certainly help for starters.

Just a note of interest…Senator Bernie Sanders interviewed on MSNBC just stated that banking interests have spent $5 BILLION in the past ten years lobbying against regulations! Is there any wonder that the people have little chance of combating these greedy b*stards??

We have to get the dirty money out of Congress! If the OWS folks want a singular message, this might be it!

I keep asking the question, “How do we get those who benefit from the corruption to stop the corruption?”

Voting would seem to be the only answer. Unfortunately, the elections are still over a year away!

Hi CL! This should be a stand-along piece. We all would benefit from your knowledge and experience, I’m sure!

For most average Americans, banking and finance is simply too complicated to really get down into the weeds. I put myself into this group. The lawyers can insert the most odious fine print into contracts that only benefit the bankers. I would venture to say that the 99% had not even heard of “derivatives” before the crash in 2008. I would also bet that many Americans have NO idea of the terms of their mortgages and how the banks can actually take their homes or raise their interest rates through the roof.

The same point applies to the workings of Congress. Just watch C-SPAN coverage for a day or two if you want to be bored out of your wits. The average American never sees what is really going on up there. They manage to make it so arcane that it would take a law degree to figure out what they are doing. Bills being debated on the floor of the House, for example, are identified by a number. Who knows the subject? The language of the bills is some of the most difficult reading I’ve come across. The average person who is working, raising a family, and keeping a home, does not have enough hours in the day to wade into it.

We also have collusion by the MSM. We really aren’t told of the shenanigans going on. It’s hard to say if this is the result of the politics of their corporate masters, or just plain laziness by so-called journalists. At any rate, the American people are pretty much left in the dark.

Meanwhile, the laws are changed by those who benefit from it with no fanfare, and we are left holding the empty bag.

In his press conference yesterday, the President was asked about the lack of any prosecution of the Wall Street crooks. He made it plain that, for the most part, they were acting within the laws. I know that this is very frustrating news for a lot of us, but I am pleased to hear from you that there are many on a state level that are going to be held to account. I guess that’s the best we can hope for! Better than nothing, I suppose.

I’m certainly not trying to make excuses for ignorance of the laws, but I’m trying to show why the American people don’t KNOW the laws. The deck is certainly stacked against the consumer. Extremely complicated banking law, the arcane workings of Congress, and a complicit MSM make for an uninformed public highly susceptible to being duped by greedy men.

Hi Sue! Thanks for posting this! I was offline yesterday and did not see it. This should quiet all those self-righteous critics in the MSM!

In the American Dream conference in Washington DC this week, Van Jones in his opening remarks stressed the fact that many organizations had been fighting tirelessly against the onslaught against the middle class in this country. MoveOn.org, DFA, SEIU, and others each have their own agenda…some against unfair labor practices, some against voter suppression, etc.

The main reason for the American Dream movement is to combine all these agencies and organizations to consolidate the power and influence without our giving up our individual identities or causes. We can all come together to support each other.

This list published by the Occupy Wall Street folks is very much like the American Dream movement’s agenda…for all to come together to fight the injustices forced on the people by the Wall Street bankers and the corrupt government. We may each have our own area of expertise or interest, but if we continue to support each other and work together, we will have so much more leverage!

I hope that the OWS folks will be able to get out this message. There is, IMO, something there for every one of us in the 99%.

CL, I would agree with you that right now we do not have that same oppression that we had then. However, as you point out, we are but one election away from the return of it. I have worried, if only a little bit, that many of the Obama policies have continued some of the things we are discussing. The Patriot Act is not one of my favorites. While it is not COINTELPRO, it is certainly a step backwards, IMO.

Kt, yes! I wear my “hippie-dom” as a proud badge of courage and honor on my sleeve to this day! I am not a lazy degenerate druggie who sponges off the government. I have worked all my life for what little I have. The use of the word “hippie” makes me both angry and proud! The fact that the GOP/TP still uses it should tell us something!

I hope that in the years to come, the Teabaggers will be tainted with that same kind of discrimination! It will serve them right!
