Amen, Sally! Daily we see the movement growing and this is a good sign! We need that “critical mass” to bring about any change. As CL has written, no protest can be truly successful unless it results in LEGAL changes. We need so much reform in our government and I am hoping, beyond hope, that the movement will do what we need it to do. Maybe the American sleeping giant is waking up! 🙂

I know it’s early for most of us here, but CNN and MSNBC are showing a virtual fortress around the Stock Exchange on Wall Street! Horses, police vehicles, and on foot, there are hundreds and hundreds of police in the streets. They are blocking all access to Wall Street itself, keeping protesters as far away as possible. So far, it’s peaceful, but it could get testy! It only takes one bad cop! There are a few people being arrested now.

CNN has just reported the Dallas, Texas Occupy has been surrounded by police but the protesters are NOT being evicted. Apparently, the city officials there are trying to find compromise with the people…very smart IMO!

ADDENDUM: To anyone who is planning on attending a march today, please please take all precautions to stay safe! The police are expecting problems and we all know how quickly things can spiral out of control!

Cher, Thanks for posting the article on the 1st amendment. As you say, it’s complicated.

As for the involvement of the federal government, there doesn’t seem to be much question about somebody helping the cities with tactical advice on how to bust up the movement. It all went down almost identically in several sites at once. I don’t think it’s coincidental at all.

I do have a question though…if a mayor of a major city contacts Homeland Security asking advice and/or assistance, what are the obligations of DHS? If a governor requests assistance, like the request for the National Guard during Hurricane Katrina, is DHS obligated legally to give that assistance? It would seem that DHS readily gave advice, probably by some bureaucrat sitting in a Washington office. I suppose it would not be up to him/her to judge whether the request would stomp on citizens’ rights or not, but to render what assistance that could be given. I’m certainly NOT taking up for DHS’ involvement…just asking.

Of course, there will be some who blame President Obama for it even though he personally had nothing to do with it. Just another excuse for the PL to gnash their teeth and tear their hair out! They never miss an opportunity!

I’d have to agree with you about the corporations. I hope that somehow, the Citizens United ruling from the Supreme Court can be overturned. This one decision from SCOTUS is killing our democracy. I believe we are going to see the results come to full and ugly fruition during this coming election. The campaign ads against President Obama have already started in my neck of the woods….paid for by Americans for Prosperity and Crossroads. We all know where they are getting their money although they aren’t required to disclose their sources.

Ed Schultz is reporting that protesters are being searched by police before being admitted back into the park.

Tensions are high. Some confrontations. A large police presence around the park.

Cher, you and KQ both are right. I wrote that comment before I really gave it enough thought. I know that it is a false equivalency! This headache is making me nuts!

It is upsetting though, when one of those lists is published, that the Dems are culpable in the money department. I know that’s the way the system works and that they must raise money too. Doesn’t mean that I like it!

I hope that before this damned migraine kills me that I will live to see the day that lobbying money is banned!

Murph, I stand corrected! I had not seen his emoprog comments bashing the President. I had seen him interviewed on the tube and he said all the right things. I also read a couple of articles he wrote and liked them.

I do agree with him here though. What we have seen from the police is outrageous!

CL, God bless you! I have really been in trouble here, trying to say what you have just said better than I could.

About a month ago, you commented to me stressing the need for legislative change. In so many words, you taught me, from your vast experience, that unless political involvement was undertaken by the OWS movement, nothing would happen and the whole thing would just fizzle out.

There are some of us here who feel that OWS needs no agenda and that the “organic” nature of the movement is just fine. I happen to subscribe to your opinion and I’m glad you’re here to reinforce what I have been saying, although I know that was not your reason for commenting! 🙂

That’s what I’ve been trying to say, KQ! Was it you who posted earlier that OWS had not yet reached critical mass?

I believe critical mass may soon be reached with this crackdown. It will only galvanize everyone to begin again to bring the rest of the country along. Only a concerted action by all OWS protests together will be enough to force the changes we need!

Thank you, KQ! My sentiments exactly! I think we might have predicted this happening…it’s just surprising that they are doing it in a coordinated attack. The cities were only going to tolerate it for just so long.

But the coordinated attack may just be the impetus to re-start the movement into further action! At least, I hope so!
