No news on my sister…thanks so much to all of you who have expressed concern. Regarding the subject matter, I have been aware of the “flip flop” over at HP but had not given it too much thought. I just assumed that Arianna was going after those almighty dollars and ratings. So I just cruised over to check out the site today. On the Politics page alone, there were the following articles: 1. “McCain Emerges as Front Man to Claim Reform Mantle” I didn’t have time to read every article completely, but the overall message was clear as a bell. Every article had a negative spin on it against President Obama in some way. That was JUST on the Politics page. I didn’t even look on the Main. I am really disappointed in the site as I depended on it for news with a “progressive” slant, something that is hard to find these days. Well…NO MORE! I am sick of the O-bashing, the heavy-handed moderation and scrubbing, the trolls and their vitriol, and the personal attacks. I know you all are thinking about a letter or something like it to point out all these things to HP. I wish all of you could know her! She is a brilliant woman who was getting ready to attend Wake Forest Law School when she first became seriously ill. It’s nice to see our group of progressives growing by the day, although HP has made it nigh on impossible to let anyone else know about us. Some of my favorite people are here and it’s great to touch base with you all. I got some bad news yesterday. My younger sister was found unconscious on the floor of her condo yesterday morning. They rushed her to the hospital where she was admitted to ICU…her kidneys are failing and she is not expected to live. Needless to say, I have been completely distraught. She lives about 100 miles away from me and I am unable to get there…there is still about 16″ of snow on my car and drifts over my knees. My little sis had been ill for many years with several chronic debilitating problems. She apparently had developed a kidney infection that just overwhelmed her. The doctors advised the family to come and I feel so bad that I cannot be there…but then, there is absolutely nothing I could do if I was able to make the trip. So, I am going to try to salvage Christmas for my beautiful grandkids, Nikos and Nicole. They are coming tomorrow to spend Christmas with me. There will be turkey and all the trimmings, pumpkin pie, and of course, fruits and nuts and candy! My heart is not really in it, but I know my sister would want me to do that. In the meantime, I wish a joyous holiday for each and every one of you here. It is a subject that should be exposed in a very bright light. One other point that I believe warrants mentioning…we have a number of these “Family” people in Congress. Coburn, Inhofe, Stupak, and others sit in the chambers of Congress and are responsible for making our laws. I personally have a big problem with this. These men take it upon themselves to travel overseas to “work” with world leaders, side-stepping our State Department and official foreign policy, something I believe is counter-productive. They are promoting their personal agendas, not the policies of the American President. This, IMHO, borders on outright treason! I have not yet read Jeff Sharlett’s book “The Family” but plan to download it to my Kindle if it’s available. I do hope that we can keep these people under the microscope. “Dangerous” is an under-statement! Ever since the summer, this has been a real roller-coaster ride. My feelings would go from “on top of the world” to “lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut”, depending on the news of the day. The republicans have managed to strip this bill down so badly that many of us don’t want it to pass. One item that struck me was the part about the “pre-existing conditions”. It’s true that the insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage for diabetes, cancer, hypertension and other chronic diseases. But here is the clincher…the insurance companies will be able to charge much, much more to those who have them. I would guess this was one of those little “compromises” to continue to shift costs to the consumer and away from the insurance companies. I have heard all the arguments about how this is a great “first step” and how this can lead to further progress on reform, but I have to wonder if the republicans will find a way to rescind what progress has been made. You know that they will do just that if given the return of control of the Senate in the next elections. There is a blogger, Matt Osborne, over at HP who has posted his challenge to all progressives to march on Washington. We had a rousing conversation last night about it. I have promised to do whatever I can to help organize. I plan to write about it here later today. If you have been watching the weather channel, you already know of our snow storm. It has been snowing hard for a few hours and I would guess that I have about 4″ on my porch right now, and the snow is coming down even harder. We are forecast to get maybe 20″ by tomorrow. I guess I’m still a kid at heart, but I love this! This is a comparatively wet snow that clings to every tree branch. It is absolutely gorgeous! It looks like one of those Currier & Ives prints. My two Shih Tzus are whining to go out to play. They love it too! Anyway, this is getting me into the Christmas spirit…a little strange for a Buddhist, but it’s all good! As you wrote, never have the American people been forced to support a for-profit industry. Some have used the analogy of auto insurance that is required. But you have the option of NOT owning or driving a car. In this health care regard, you will not have any option. This bill is a travesty and a slap in the fact of every working American.
