Huffington Post Goes NSA on Its Members

HP, AOL, and their principals knew exactly what they were entering into…and so did their respective lawyers. This was a business decision, plain and simple.

Murph, I’ve been a long-time fan of yours from HP and I appreciate your sharing your experience regarding being consulted on the policy change. I’m curious about the consultations, and wonder if those consulted were those who, like you, seem to support this change (at least at the outset), as reflected in your response to MacDonald’s announcement on HP.

Given the way HP has rolled out this change, as well as their response, I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t include a wider range of perspectives and enough representation of how the community really thinks of this. In short, they stacked the deck so that they can hear what they wanted to hear.

Yes, and the front page seems to have become even more tabloidy, less substantive over the past couple of days. Using articles on lesbians to drive clicks is cheap and smells of desperation.

And the lack of comments across the board will only diminish the value of each article. I often read them to gain more information and insights than the actual article offered. It doesn’t seem that HP fully understands how much value the community provided the site, beyond the online relationships.

And, whatever one thinks about TMZ and their methods, it would still cover celebrity gossip better, since it’s at least original material and isn’t driven by their interns’ obsessions with sideboobs, Miley, and the Kardasians. 😉

Yes, you and another person had posted this on Epoch (and maybe Poynter) — thanks for do it. I suspect that HP/AOL will be promoting aggressively to regain their numbers. They won’t sit back and bleed users; however, from MacDonald’s statement about developing a more “diverse” community, it doesn’t look like they value long-timers who tend to be engaged and knowledgable, and and that they will be looking to attract eyeballs from the various other AOL properties and partners.

It will be interesting to see what their mobile numbers look like once they end anonymity on their mobile software, too.

Someone posted this link on another site, but I thought I’d share it here, since it will be interesting to track the exodus:
