I thought I was riled up during the Occupy movement, but this issue is so fundamental, so close to the bone, that I want to riot in the streets. I know that many Dems–women AND men–have been speaking out about this, but I honestly think this is so important an issue that the President should weigh in. He HAS more than weighed in through his wonderful policy, so I guess a good case could be made that there is nothing more important than the actual policy–which is SPOT ON. Still, I fell the need for additional vocal repudiation against the RW and the actual war on women. Maybe he should wait until the general election. I just feel so furious NOW that it would do my heart good to hear him blast the Right on this. It rings true of everything I know about psychology and human nature. It illuminates all the behaviors that we see and shake our heads over: wanting Intrusive government while they decry it, voting for policies against their seeming self-interest over and over again, the seeming hypocrisy–all of those things have a certain logic once one understands what there real issues are. And although it manifests itself overwhelmingly in the Right-wing, these are personality traits and are also seen on the Left. Cenk Uyger, Ed Shultz and others who’s names escape me are really the same types. Of course, they used to be registered repubs, but there are many on the left with the same pathology. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that your Republican friend was open to listening to you, given their insistence on confirmation bias, but I have to say it was because it was you that they were able to listen. I have a theory that in addition to the hawkish desire to have the biggest army in the galaxy, there is an unstated understanding that it is a jobs program. There are hundreds of thousands of non-combat service men and women around the globe–and I’m just taking about non-contracters. What will happen to all these people when they aren’t in the service? More people than we were lead to believe pushed back HARD. We were lead to believe we are divided in half, and we are not. It’s like claiming that when 90% vs 10% are in disagreement, we are polarized. Uh, no! And now I see this contraceptive issue with Catholic institutions being a trumped up controversy by the Right AND all media. ALL media. (One caveat about that though: I did hear something that resonated, and that was that even Catholics who favor birth control will get tribal about what they may perceive as an attack on Mother Church. Hard to know.) I know that the election will be hard-fought. (If you want, check out the video I posted below of the Swift Boat liars–it’s potent as hell!)It will get so ugly, most of us will be repulsed. But the more I step back out of the horse race, I see that all the R’s have is outright lies. And I think if they really believed in their policies, they wouldn’t need to lie. If they thought that the public agreed with them, they wouldn’t need lies. They must know at some level that they do not have a platform that is acceptable. And in turn that tells me that we can win again–on the merits of the policies alone. Of course, what 2010 told me is that people can freak out and go moron. But I think people have gotten “used to” the economy now in a way they didn’t in 2010–it’s not as scary, and even if they don’t see that it’s getting better yet, they are at least seeing that it’s stable. We must all pray hard for the economy. Actually, I thought it was our site that was down. I got a message that said that PPOV was not connected to the server–and it looked official! I didn’t have a problem with other sites though, so who knows? I got that message just as I was about to schedule the post for later posting. I just silently cursed, read a book for an hour, and then came back and PPOV was back online. In a panic, I hit “Publish,” smiled, and went to bed.
I also like that aspect of Obama’s budget but I guess my really favorite part is this statement:
“”When unemployment is as high as it is today, budget deficits are essential to support demand in the private economy” And everything else sort of falls into place from that.
