I can’t speak for AdLib, but I didn’t take his post to imply what those discredited sources were saying. Since 9/11 and the Patriot Act (I think that’s the one I mean) any local law enforcement can ask advice from DHS. DHS was created to coordinate all law enforcement and I took AdLib’s comment at face value–that the local police forces and cities can call DHS and say, “Hey, any advice you can offer about how to deal with these protesters?” I don’t see that as a conspiracy, really. I think it happens regularly. It WOULD be a coordinated act if it was initiated by DHS, and the Feds called all the mayors and said, “This is what your going to do.” But the fact remains that 18 cities were on 2 conference calls and discussed what to do. I think many of the ideas about how to discredit OWS may have come from those calls, and DHS may have given them some ideas on squelching the movement. But again, while I don’tt like that, it doesn’t mean DHS instructed the cities to do this. That’s why LA, for one, remained peaceful. About the militarization of the police, I find it extremely troubling. I do understand that the police are at war with some very bad players who have access to serious weaponry, and they should be able to fight back on an equal playing field. But the downside, of course, is that they can use those heavy weapons against anyone. There needs to be some strong rules about that! Riot gear is one thing, but those guns and tear gas and LRADS–Christ, these aren’t drug cartels! They are peaceful protesters, and even if they weren’t peaceful, helmets and vests will more than protect them from the occasional rock, worst case scenario. I have been reading a bit about this. Reports have come out showing how the cops get plain lazy and will now automatically tazer someone who just isn’t moving fast enough for them. And the other issue is that now that we are winding down in Iraq, arms manufacturers are selling more products to police forces. This is really, really frightening to me. I can almost understand those 2nd Amendment fanatics–see how the police have radicalized me? I’m serious–they turn pacifists like me (and kes) into militants (almost).
