One of my greatest frustrations with the way this debate has been framed is that almost every member of Congress involved keeps on claiming that the goal is to reduce costs of premiums. That is clearly not the case. As you point out, only universal coverage (or even mostly “universal”) will meaningfully cut costs. And they know it and we know it. While I am still opposed to taxing union plans, I am somewhat mollified after learning the excise tax on Cadillac plans has another potential advantage of decreasing overall medical spending. (Now, from what I read I am not at all sure that a decrease in SPENDING is a decrease in COST!) Vegas, I wrote that badly. Did you see my clarification to Javaz below? What I was trying to say was that I had the impression that Ed Schultz thought Haiti was a black issue and not a human issue because of the fact that he had three African Americans discussing the aid effort, and that seemed to me to send a message that this was something AA’s are more concerned about than other people. To top it off, I was just watching Matthews who said that this was the first time he’d seen the President so impassioned (about Haiti that is). He went on to say that this was because Obama is black. I am not saying those are racist comments, but they do put race foremost, when, in the case of Haiti, I think it is a human, not a racial, issue. Do you still feel I am off base? She would of course climb trees, but she would also leave the house pre-dawn in her nightgown and run into Main street to see the circus, ride on the running boards of those cars from the thirties, and my favorite story: This was Philidelphia in the late twenties/early thirties. She was walking around her neighborhood and she was 5. She came across a baby carriage in the street ( but right outside an open door) that held two black babies– which she took home. She hid them in her room, and played with them until they started to cry, and my grandmother was alerted. My mother claimed she had found them, and that no one wanted them. My grandmother took the babies into the street to find a hysterical mother. And she came from a Ukrainian family– is that near Estonia?
