I’m not entirely sure if they’re “easy-outs” or just a generally simplification of the following idea:

Conservatism is the confluence of two or more of these factors: Relatively lower intelligence, lack of information, unwillingness to seek out new information, lack of critical thinking skills, and sheer bloody-mindedness.

By combining this factors, a range of conservatives can be produced, from the moronic hick stereotype to the slick political operative, to the intelligent, yet ignorant individual.

This is not to say that these factors do not exist on the liberal side of the equation, but that, unlike on the conservative side, they do not predominate.

In essence, liberals are less likely to embody these factors than conservatives are.

I’m not quite sure what exactly is going to happen. They’re rather sparse on the details. However, there’s a easy answer to this question overall:

Any institution that is not purely non-profit, religious, etc does not have a “right to conscience”.

I leave this comment at the risk of being uninformed as I’m not fully up to date on this issue. So, please bear with me. You’ve done it before. 🙂

So, I hear some pundits sounding off about a provision in, I think, the Defence Authorisation Act, which supposedly gives the Executive unilateral authority to order the assassination of people abroad. These pundits are against this because it, apparently, allows for the assassination of Americans abroad. The big sticking point was: “Without due process.”

Hold on! The implication here is that foreigners don’t deserve due process, while Americans do.

Sorry, but this is absurdly contradictory. Rights don’t mean squat if you don’t extend them to people outside your group, i.e, the rest of the human race. Of course, there are exceptions to different extents: Prisoners, soldiers, etc. However, they are exceptions for good reasons.

Now, I accept that Nationalism and Realpolitik are the “in” things nowadays, but on a moral basis this is absolutely ridiculous. There are good moral arguments on both sides of assassination issues – the utilitarian position being one of them – but to vie for a hypocritical “golden mean” is just dumb.

I may have just blown this completely out of proportion, but it irked me a little.

Oops, I meant Britain. Northern Ireland is similar to the American Bible Belt in terms of its elected officials.

The abortion boats thing is mostly hype and myth. A dutch group was – I don’t think they’re operating anymore – operating a ship that went around the less women-friendly countries of Europe handing out contraceptives and giving advice on family planning. If they performed any abortions, they were few.

There are a few pro-choice groups around, but the anti-abortion people are far better organised. And the government is rather useless on this issue, or really any issue in which they have to tackle a “controversial” subject.

A few days ago, there were a group of anti-abortion protestors at my college. Just as an aside, abortion isn’t legal in Ireland – except in life-threatening circumstances – and, unfortunately, there isn’t really a concerted political effort to make it legal. So, guess what they were protesting.

They were protesting a series of seminars being given to med. students about the ethics around abortion and various stances on the issue. Now, these seminars were being sponsored by the Crisis Pregnancy Programme, which is a government funded counseling service for pregnant women whose sole purpose is to talk women out of having abortions – By going to the UK, or elsewhere in Europe.

They called it a “masterclass in abortion”. Here’s a picture of these, in all honesty, imbeciles:

They’re organised by a Catholic organisation called “Youth Defence”, whose sole purpose seems to be to bitch about medical issues that they know almost nothing about.

I know the feeling. I’ve taken up origami, club juggling and the Food Network in the last few weeks to ease my inter-semester boredom. Though I doubt I’d have the patience for doing something like that video. I blame technology. 😉

Khirad, a few months ago I had to analyse several historical websites for instances of bias. The theme of the project was the American Civil War and the Museum of the Confederacy’s website was one of the websites that I’d to review. Another one of the websites was the US Army Center for Military History: The Civil War.

Both these websites contained instances of bias, but the Army Center’s website was by far the worst. On a website which claims to be a definitive source on the Civil War, the Confederacy was barely ever mentioned. What made this worse is that the website is indirectly funded by the American government.
