Probably most people are unaware that 911 emergency response systems are “increasingly out-dated, costly to maintain, and in danger of failure,” as the Congressional Research Office points out. The idea that funds are being diverted away from such a necessary service is disgusting, but not very surprising given the current anti-government sentiment that is being spread around these days. Here’s another important government agency: The Center For Disease Control. My wife had a client who worked for them who also described out-dated equipment and faltering technology due to lack of funds. The building in which they operate had structural problems, including a leaky roof. They had to cover computers and other equipment with a tarp when it rained. Are most Americans aware of such things? Probably not. I saw the CDC depicted in two different movies: Outbreak (starring Dustin Hoffman) and a made-for-TV version of Stephen King’s The Stand. Both movies showed a glittering, state-of-the-art facility instead of the reality of the place. I heard on a podcast the other day a spokesperson for alternative energy say that we should remove all the subsides, for both oil AND alternative energy, and that way alternative energy could at least have a chance to compete. They went on to point out that the big oil companies get 36.5 billion in subsidies, and all alternative energy put together gets a subsidy of only one half billion. I didn’t catch the time period over which these amounts were received, but the ratio is noteworthy. Oil companies break records for corporate profits, year after year.
