Before that, my palette and brushes were dry for several months. The time one spends away form art tends to accumulate in a depressing way… I lose momentum. I know exactly what you mean about life getting in the way. That does happen. I have a suggestion, if you want one: do a little something every day, even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes. Keep a sketchbook, and don’t “overthink” what you put in it. It’s all about momentum; set your hands in motion before your brain has a chance to talk them out of it. (Honestly, it feels a little improper for me to tell you these things because you’re a teacher and all. But as I suggest these habits to you, I am also lecturing myself. I’m getting into the habit of carrying my sketchbook wherever I go.) In answer to your question; this is also oil. It looks kind of like a watercolor because I limited my palette to bright, clear colors for this painting. I tried to paint my cat Oskär sitting in the sunlight, using very bright colors and thick paint. Here I am, using green and purple and such on a cat… I don’t know. But these colors seemed to be there, in the reflected and ambient light. When Donald Duck runs out into the neighborhood with his gun, I couldn’t help be be reminded of that Glenn Beck fan who went gunning for the Tides Foundation. This video illustrates very well the dangers of this kind of irresponsible radio.
