It raises concerns about various public concerns being influenced by private interests. At about 2:00, the narrators says that “maybe that’s why all kinds of people – Republicans, Democrats, Independents – are totally frustrated with our government.” But perhaps that paints “all kinds of people”with too broad a brush. I’ve argued with Rightwingers who absolutely hate “The Story of Stuff,” and point out that the video was financed through The Tides Foundation. They call it propaganda. Glenn Beck has frightened many of his viewers about The Tides Foundation, and anything it does. He claims that the country’s youth is being indoctrinated by the Left through videos like these because the are sometimes shown in public school Byron Williams was one such frightened individual. His actions were inexcusable, but his example vividly illustrates the depths of fear that exist on the issue. I hear the Rightwinger’s concerns, and I say “But the things that the video teaches are true and based on fact!” How can people object to fact? It espouses a view that is comfortable with the Left, but the Right hates it with a passion. I guess the question I’m coming around to is this: Should this kind of video be shown in public schools, where children come from both liberal AND conservative families? Like I said, I’ve argued this point with conservatives before, and my answer to that question would be “Yes, it should,” but I can also see why conservative parents would not want this video to be shown to their children. I do have this to say in defense of Mild Bill: he DID preface the video by saying “Whenever someone begins to preach to me…” And no one DID preach to him in the first place. That makes his virulent response to said preaching an abstract matter. He seemed to set up a hypothetical enemy, and attacked that. Perhaps he assumed that we had no fundamentalist Christians here. He admits that there are things in the Holy Word of God that are hard to believe, and that we all have an “inner critic” that notices these things, and tells us to be skeptical. But by friending me on YouTube, this guy has knocked on MY door. I may just respond to him, telling him that the inner critic is a GOOD thing, and explain a little about empirical thought. Also to congratulate him on recognizing reasonable doubt within himself. That’s more than most fundamentalists are willing to admit.
