In order for Palin to win the nomination, she has to be at least a little bit predictable. After all, it isn’t the candidate who plots the course alone… that candidate must depend on political strategists. And what political strategist would want to work with Palin? She describes herself as a rogue, which is one of the most honest things I’ve heard her say. A strategist could lay out campaign plans in front of her, and say “Okay Sarah, we need to to do this, and say that…” and she is just as likely to stomp her little foot and say “NO! Actually, I’m not such a good spy. I decided to bring my iPod to work to listen to podcasts instead of having to hear the conservative radio. So I’m listening to the Nicole Sandler show, among other things. She played a clip of Newt Gingrich trying to spin his objection to the Paul Ryan plan. Newt is trying to say that when he was talking about “rightwing social engineering,” he wasn’t talking about Ryan at all! He says he was talking about a hypothetical plan. He did have a lot to do with encouraging House members to support Ryan’s plan. Why did he do that? My guess is that he just listened to the Washington establishment. I’m sure everyone remembers that when Ryan first introduced his plan, almost all of the inside-the-beltway media was singing his praises, saying how courageous he was! How bold! He was the hero of the moment. I listened to the Slate political podcast at the time, and they were even talking about how good-looking he was. But many ordinary people feel differently than the Washington establishment does. A few minutes ago, I had to walk back through the production area, where the guys have Rush Limbaugh playing really loud. Rush was thundering on about the “DemoCRAT” party as usual. He was making the point that the Stimulus was designed to help the Democrats and that everything in it was designed to do just that. I got back to my office and thought about that. In a sense, he’s right. If the stimulus continues to work and the economy continues to improve, that definitely would help the Democratic party. How could it not? Every Republican voted against it, as I remember. But does Rush really want the stimulus to fail, and the economy to fall to ruin? Sure, that would hurt the Democrats, but is it really worth it to him? Here’s a couple of links that say so: Apparently, the ability to digest cheese differs from region to region. I hope none of these Chinese diners mentioned in the Financial Times get sick from it. It’s facts like these that make me suspicious of the labels found on packaged food that spell out nutritional requirements, and how much the food in question meets those requirements. It makes me wonder, do they just assume that all human beings have the same requirements? Are these percentages of the various nutrients calculated for a generic model of Homo Sapiens? In that year, he said during his campaign “The great strength of the Democratic party in my lifetime has been that it has always produced young, nasty people who had no respect for their elders… And I think that one of the great problems we have in the Republican Party is that we don’t encourage you to be nasty.
