Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

Thanks Hokey, was just cruising the other blogs, yep still awake. The Unions may call for a general strike…I think the rest of the Country should do the same in sympathy…High School kids are asking everyone in 12th grade to do a walk out at 2:00 pm on Friday.

Buddy, it’s happening all over, much to the Republicans dismay. I’ve a feeling this is going to hurt the GOP come 2012 elections. Unlike others, I believe that people will remember what the GOP has done on a local level and what the GOP in DC has not done…

PW-With you on that, I only have enough lawn so it balances out my beds and give the dog a place to poop…other than that, no need for it, uses too much water and needs too much work to maintain it.

PW-Love trilliums, we have them here in the northeast also, but more northern than where I am on the coast.

I had such fun designing this, the guy from the EPA said I did a great job by including not only flowering and fruiting shrubs, (for the birds), and endangered wetland plants. I also included various plants that act as water run off filters and to stop the soil erosion of the banks…most people forget that plants have many uses besides just being pretty.

PW-When I my landscape design business was up and running, I did a design to restore a designated wetland. The client thought it would be great if he leveled his 180 ft. long back yard, that back up to a major tributary, of all the trees and vegetation, until the state and city came after him.

He hired me to design it’s restoration, which was wetland approved plants/shrubs/trees 100ft in from the water line. Oh well, so much for that big expanse of lawn the guy originally wanted…

I used our version of the pitcher plant, Jack-in-the-pulpit as one of the restoration plants. In CT they are considered an native endangered species, fined if removed or damaged, and very expensive to replace. They had to be purchased from an State approved nursery.

I loved the job, it was fun to be able to re-create it, in fact I think I made it better than it originally was!

(I also put some “Skunk Cabbage” in there! The client asked me what they were, and I just smiled and said, oh the birds love them!)

Usually Austin roses are very hardy. Have you tried these types that are not Austin roses, “Carefree Wonder” or “Knock Out” roses?

I practice tough love in my gardens, if they are too much work, they get pulled…
