I don’t do it for myself, but I do write off my husbands workclothes as uniforms since the life expectancy of them is 3 mos…he has a marine fiberglass and paint repair shop…his sneakers last one month…we buy them by the 1/2 dozen. It is all too much for them to understand…there are people out there who truly have no idea how things work in this world. I have a brother-in-law who swears that SS, Medicare and Medicaid need to be done away with. Then I ask him how would he like to have his 88 yr. old parents living with him and having to pay for their medical costs and RX’s? Because they ain’t living with me! I think too many people are scared to go into their own business, because it really is easier to work for someone and have that paycheck and health benifits, with out all the small hassels that owning your own business can have. We understand the consequences of why we make the entries the way we do. Many of them just do without knowing why they do it, they push paper. They have no clue that making one entry wrong will cause a cascading effect of errors that take a while to untangle. Most $10 hr Bookkeepers can work within QB, but Peachtree is too advanced for them since you cannot go back and change entries, Peachtree has realtime posting, you need to correct things with a journal entry. What really throws them are the balance sheet accounts such as Sales Tax Payable, Undeposited Funds, A/P and P/R Taxes Payable. » Posted By BigDogMom On February 9, 2011 @ 8:09 am A lot of my clients don’t even understand what “Overhead” means, let alone COG’s… PW if you were closer in area, I would highly recommend you to one of my newer clients, trying to teach them the basics of business management is making me fall further and further behind in their bookkeeping…they have a great product and it has become very successful since being featured on the Oprah show. Example 1: My husband charges $95.00 per hour to fix boats, if he spent 10 hrs a week to do his bookkeeping at the average rate of $50.00 per hour, he would lose $450 per week or $1800 per month in revenue, plus the lost time away from the business cultivating new client leads and preparing estimates. Example 2: Penalty for filing a late CT State Sales and Use Tax is a flat $50.00 plus interest of 5% every day that the filing is late. You owe $100 in Sales Tax X 5% for 30 days = $150.00 in interest + $50.00 = $200.00, now you owe $300.00. -OR- Where as it would have cost you the $100 in sales tax due, plus approx. $12.50 for me to file it for you, (15 min. @ $50.00 per hour), $112.50. The Chart of Accounts has always been a bone of contention between what the client needs, or thinks they need and the CPA. There have been times that is it so overly complicated, that I just trash it at Y/E and start over. Walking that thin line between what the CPA needs for tax purposes and what will help the client better understand trends in his business. Sometimes I feel like I am an interpreter between them and their CPA, the State and IRS Tax laws…and their therepist, guieding them and counceling them on their relationship with money. Through the years I have seen, like you, where businesses go off the rails, the bookkeeping/accounting end of it is usually nine times out of ten the cause. Many of these small business spend more time trying to handle the bookkeeping/financial end of things which leads to less time to the promotion of their product or servicing their clients. My sales pitch for my services to a new client is, “I do the Voodoo that I do, so that you can do the Voodoo that you do”. I learned this phrase from an old CPA that I worked for when I left the corporate world to get up to snuff on small business accounting and it has worked for me every time. Some small business owners believe that in order to be in business for themselves that they should know every aspect of it, including accounting/taxes/payroll this is where they go wrong, become very frustrated and make a lot of mistakes. The makers of Quickbooks, Intuit, is a great promoter of this belief system. “Just buy our product and you too can do your own bookkeeping, it’s so easy!” So many of them think that they will save money by not hiring a competent bookkeeper that they can do it themselves, or can get by by having a clerk/paper pusher who says they know how to use Quickbooks for $10 bucks an hour. In the long run, it will cost them more in CPA fees, tax fines and penalties and or liens on their business for failure to pay. When the economic downturn in 2008 happened, I lost a lot of clients, they just couldn’t afford to pay me, they decided to do it themselves or go the cheap route.
