Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

I have a very unusual lifestyle but very downscale. I’m a sorority house director (mom) and live with all my expenses paid. I have given away practically everything I own which is incredibly freeing! I have a small apt in our huge house that is home to over 80 girls and live at the house year round even when the girls are home on vacation. It’s really like being semi-retired, though I am a homebody and need to be around to supervise my cleaning and cooking staff. All my earnings are basically gravy and I have some health issues so it’s an ideal job I intend to do until I no longer can.

They don’t even intend for the goods to last. My father had a retail business for fifty years and in the back room we had an old refrigerator for employees – it had rounded edges and old fashioned ice cubes trays, I’m sure it was from the 50’s. (ancient like me) That old thing was there as long as I can remember – I suppose part of it was that it had no fancy gadgets on it so there was nothing to go wrong, but my son bought an expensive house about five years ago with a new stainless refrigerator and it’s already gone out and they’ve had to replace it. We live in a disposable world – think of the landfills!

I totally agree with you – go through any small town with a WalMart and you’ll see an empty small town with closed shops. And talk about the wealth being consolidated into a few peoples hands – all four Walton kids are in the top wealthiest Americans list but they don’t pay well and they like part time employees so they don’t have to pay benefits. These stores destroyed small town America. Plus the overwhelming majority of the products they sell are from China.

I was going to say something really snooty about working at WalMart, which I try my best never to set foot in, and then I realized that karma might get me me – I’m only 60 and there’s still time to be a greeter. Please no god..

Is there a suggested amount to donate monthly? What does this money go towards? I am really enjoying the positive atmosphere of this place and I’m taking the time to go back and read archived posts – some are wonderful. They are also a great way to get to know the members. Many of the posts have been so open and personal. I just want you to know that I appreciate them.

Don’t worry Deygirl, I’m 60 – I was out of college in 1973 and expecting my first baby. My husband and friends pretty much looked like the band. My times have changed – funny how you never feel older inside.

I value wisdom and knowledge also. I wish I could have had more wisdom of how fast life goes and how to prioritize at a younger age. It’s easy to reflect at age 60. It goes so fast – live and enjoy each and every day. Each one is a gift
