Morning Blog 6th Anniverary Edition

Hi, Kalima – Thank you for the article, the earthquake in Italy was indeed tragic. That one aerial view certainly showed the dramatic difference in damages between the older and newer construction.

As for those typhoons in Japan, my older daughter is in Tokyo now for one month. She was delayed a few hours leaving San Diego last Sunday because of the first one. She was so excited, they had just started non-stop flights between San Diego and Tokyo! After customs, she found out there were no trains available and she waited in long lines to get a bus. She said there were trees down across some of the roads.

I just found the news a few hours ago about the second typhoon that may make landfall near Tokyo on your Tuesday. – I wonder if Japan has a typhoon season like we have a hurricane season with the Atlantic Ocean.

Stay safe with this next typhoon and hope it is not a strong storm. – Take care. 🙂

Hi, Kalima – Doing good, still trying to adjust to the fact that a person who has never held an elected position is now the presumptive GOP candidate to be President. Trump is so unqualified in too many ways to count. 😉

You have my complete sympathy, my husband has had a chronic bad back since his 40’s. He has gone through similar experiences – including setting it off from just a loud sneeze. All the best for you, may there be less setting off of that bad back. 🙂

And you are so right, it is significant to remember all of the down-ballot Democratic candidates. Especially in the Senate, trying to oust Toomey here in PA! – Thinking of you across the ocean in Tokyo, my friend. Hope your day/evening goes well. 🙂

Hi, Kalima – I am so sorry that the chair won! 😉 Glad to hear that you are on the mend. – I did not open your great compilation of articles today, just scanned the headlines. It is sometimes difficult to absorb so many injustices and the suffering that is inflicted on people throughout the planet. Yet I do try to keep informed and continue to hope for that elusive peace for humanity.

For me, these global injustices put the US elections into another perspective. Debating over who is the most progressive Democratic candidate becomes less significant than the possible GOP erosion of the actual progress in the US that has been made by all Democrats. – Holding anyone to the position of pristine perfection or conversely, to complete condemnation for past actions, is simply creating a barrier to unity for the Democratic party.

Despite the rhetorical negativity against both Democratic candidates, it is a Democratic President who will ultimately “preserve, protect and defend” not only the Constitution but the citizens of this nation for whom it was written. – The GOP candidates do NOT even comprehend the concept of this oath a President states upon taking the office.

Liked that picture of the cat who goes after postmen! 🙂 No matter how deplorable the news, I always enjoy those pictures of the day that you include in your MB. – Hope you get continue to get better, take care.

Hi, Kalima – Thank you for all of the great articles, you definitely give a tremendous variety of opinions with the news. Your morning blog has such comprehensive coverage from around the world! And I enjoy those great photographs. 🙂

No, I don’t think Sander’s lack of support for the Brady Act was the sole reason for increased mass shootings either yet background checks are a significant measure to decrease gun violence. – There are so many finely tuned nuances on those campaign trails.

I forgot about the TEPCO executives escaping in private helicopters as people were dying, absolutely despicable! I do remember the lack of adequate information with much time passing before the actual damage was revealed. And those scenes of the massive destruction caused by the tsunami. – I agree, they all should be held accountable for their actions. – It is the world we live in where even so-called justice is not fair, one can only continue to fight against the corruption and injustice.

And thank you for the updates about your cats. – One time we couldn’t find our Bengal for several hours, she is an indoor cat so there were only so many places she could hide. But she has also escaped out the front door a few times. – Turned out that she had gone in a closet and the door had been closed without knowing she was in there. All of that calling for kitty and she did not meow! 🙂 Take care.

Hi, Kalima – I am sorry to hear about your loss, my deepest condolences. I have always had a cat since I was seven, just one at a time. My cat now is a Bengal that we got less than a week after our previous cat passed. I could not stand the house without a cat, it was so empty. My husband had always wanted a Bengal so this is our first one, she is very playful and even figured out how to get some doors open. My other cats were all tabbies. – Hoping that your missing one may be found for you.

I will never understand how killing for any cause is supposedly justified by the extremists throughout the world. Whether for religion, for land, for wealth, for power…..no matter what, it is inhumane. With that so-called ceasefire in Syria, it is absurd to designate some areas as “safe” and some areas as “targets”.

Glad to see the indictments against those three at TEPCO, may true justice prevail. Their disregard for safety measures prior to the Fukushima nuclear disaster was indeed criminal.

As for the article about welfare reform and Sanders/Clinton, this is an example of perhaps why I have become less connected to the processes of campaigning and the primaries. On the surface, based upon what the author writes, Clinton supported a bill that appears to have single handedly caused the increased poverty levels in this nation between 1996 and 2016. Seriously, one decision twenty years ago makes her unqualified to be President? Then the same must hold true for the one decision made by Sanders in 1992 when he did not support the Brady Act, there have been more mass shootings incidents and deaths from 2005 to 2016 than in the previous 23 years.

Despite defenses that may arise from either side….the key factor here is that neither increased poverty or increased gun violence between then and now resulted from the decisions of these individuals alone. This article omits the fact that the federal minimum wage has not been increased since 2009; it has been incompatible with the cost of living for seven years. In my analogy with Sanders, many omit the fact that the Brady Act does not apply to the firearms transfers by unlicensed private sellers; the gun loophole still continues.

The point is that there are other significant factors for the causes of poverty and gun violence in this nation. Both Sanders and Clinton ultimately support measures to reduce poverty and gun violence. – And for both sides, a consensus must be reached in Congress first before any bill can be placed on the President’s desk and enacted into law….to actually fulfill those campaign promises. – I am almost more concerned about being able to get a majority in the Senate back for the Democrats.

Well, Kalima – the primary for my state of PA is April 26th. For now, I remain an undecided voter. Sometimes it seems as if my vote may not even matter by then. And whatever the campaign debating over the words progressive and socialist, I remain a Democrat. I do NOT want any GOP to even get near the White House door.

On a final note, that picture of the aurora taken from the International Space Station is magnificent! – All the best to you from my little corner of the world. 🙂

Hi, Kalima – I forgot about those earthquakes in Japan, glad that you and your hubby are okay. I will have to ask my daughter if she experienced it as well, she is at Tokyo Tech. – There is so much heartbreaking news of social injustice throughout the world. Thank you for still reporting what needs to be known and including those great pictures. There was a tie for my favorite picture this time, I liked both that beautiful peacock lantern and the lonely sloth hugging a stuffed animal for comfort.

– The injustices to females worldwide continue as a dark page on the history of humanity. The FGM statistic was staggering – I am left without words except to say that I am thankful for international humanitarian groups. – I still have to view that documentary by the young refugee girl.

– As for the agendas of Ted Cruz, he is like a slimy snake slithering in the grass – one wants to get away from him as quickly as possible. His so-called “family values” are full of hypocrisy. Cruz is cold, calculating and unqualified to be President. Did you see his recent logo – it says “TrusTed”, I certainly do not trust him!

– With the ongoing debates between Hillary and Bernie, I remain an undecided voter. I can see both pros and cons for each. And I am definitely not a single issue voter, I look at the entire spectrum of issues. – I just wonder where will all this hatred of Hillary go if for whatever reason she would win the nomination? Will voters stay home rather than cast a vote for her? – This election is unprecedented in many ways, I just do not want a GOP wing/nut in the White House.

Hi, Kalima – Thank you for the comprehensive news and great pictures! Amid all of the other news and the U.S. election shenanigans, I enjoyed that view of the northern lights from the International Space Station.

– I continue to be disgusted by the sheer arrogance and hatred against our President. Despite the water contamination with lead in Michigan, the GOP in Congress are only concerned about eliminating measures to keep our water resources clean. History will not be kind to the antics of these idiots – they do not serve We the People.

– I did not know that another nuclear reactor was going to be started up again in Japan, I sincerely hope that the safety measures are more than sufficient.

You may recall that my older daughter studied in Tokyo while in college. Well, she completed her PhD in Molecular Biology and last month was awarded a 2 year post-doc fellowship. That means fully funded research and a salary! – Her first year will still be in the U.S. and the second year will be in Japan!

It has been a decade since she last visited, she has been practicing her Japanese. – So they would like her there for one month now to get protocols started. She leaves on the 30th for your lovely country. At her request, we got her a new winter coat for Christmas for her to wear over there when you get that snow. 😉 One that will also fit better in her suitcase. – Keep warm and hope that your day/evening goes well. 🙂
