Bito: they have cooking schools at the high end variety of stores, but I’m talking about building a cooking class kitchen in the neighborhood – surely there is an abandoned store or gas station?? And then having produce trucks be onsite after class, allowing people to purchase on-site the produce they were able to learn and sample. I just think there’s some legs to this. Now, if I can just find the time to explore it all…..

Thanks for watching. I thought it was very, very good. It’s like Vanity Fair magazine – I subscribe, and read every issue, every article (even the UGH – fashion ones which usually don’t interest me at all) because they are well researched, well written and I always learn something from them that comes into play sooner or later. I had little interest in the farm bill; that’s no longer true, thanks to Chris Hayes and UP.

Hope your chaos has subsided, and you are resting. Baby Girl is hard at work, back home. She has some tricks up her sleeve! I’ll send you an email. You will be a “proud papa” again, no doubt!

So Bito: They also talked about limiting WHAT TYPES of food are eligible. I must admit, I think it is GOOD to say mac-n-cheese and coca-cola are not true “foods”. But then the topic turned to how do we teach people what are good foods, and how to prepare them? There was a chef on who gets SNAP grants to run nutrition and cooking schools. Great idea, but likely to go. And I do think that donuts, Fritos and Cokes (while I love them) are not really “food”. Given the lack of health care, I think it also becomes more and more imperative to try and prevent diabetes (which San ANtonio suffers from epidemically).

So I thought: why not go to the largest grocery chain, and talk them into a plan to set up two test kitchens, one in the poor Hispanic section of town, the other in the poor African American section. Teach them about how to cook beans, cornbread, greens or okra stew. I’m sure the ones my generation – the grannies – remember these foods. But the next problem: no place to buy them – comes into play. Why not have the stores bring them out to the school/neighborhoods on a mobile food market? I have a friend who once wrote a song about Mr. Megna’s mobile veggie cart. Why not try and go back to this? What a great service! Where I live, there is a large chain that IS very community minded, thank goodness. Maybe this idea would sell to them. Who knows? surely something can be done, though. You have to try.

Hi KQ. I certainly thought so. He also said that the MAJORITY of those on food stamp assistance are W-H-I-T-E. Goes agains their stupid prejudices as well. He was really really entertaining. I’m doing a reply to Bito above as well; read it for my “storming of the brains” as my Palestinian friend used to say.

When I went to the W. “selection” protest in Austin at the Capitol, I was shocked to see the difference in styles. All the R’s had “Bush/Cheney” yard signs – no real creativity. The D’s had “Brothers don’t let Brothers steal elections” and “Commander in Thief” hand made posters. It was at the time W. had the bandaid covering up the boil on his face. My friend and I wore matching band aids that said “You can’t cover up democracy” and “I’m boiling mad”. quite the crowd pleasers.

My theory is that it shows the difference between rote learning and critical thinking. And my favorite bumper sticker of all times was a very simple one that said simply “We are not all sheep”. Good on so very many levels!

Glad you are OK, Kes. Like me, you act without much forethought when it comes to interceding in what appears to be a dangerous situation. I’ve done it before, only to realize post event how risky it had been. It’s why I think my life span in Afghanistan would be somewhere short of 30 minutes.

Foodchain: The healer taught me this, by teaching me that “what you resist, persists”. As I said, I’m not proud of these feelings, but I no longer try and deny them. At least it spurs me on to try even harder with those who – in my mind, at least – truly deserve a chance since they were given none to start with.

I found a baby mockingbird two days ago, lying in the gutter of my neighborhood. He was about a week short of flying, and had fallen. I picked him up, and waited for mom/dad mocker to come dive bomb me. Nothing. Five minutes later, still nothing, so I decided to put him on the ground, in some bushes. He fell headlong into the bushes. There are horrendous fire ants where I live, and they often kill such baby birds. So I scooped him up, took him home, and set him in our half bath. He fought and bit me and screamed bloody murder. I called a wildlife rescure organization, and the Blov and I drove him over. He will be fine, and they expect to release him in a week or two. Two cats lived near where he fell. Again, he had little to no chance. I love cats to pieces, but was not going to let him be a game for them.

It harkens back to giving things a chance. Hope and change. It really DOES matter! – AB

I am a racist bigot. Let me just get that out.

Following kes’ & CL’s dialogue made me think of something that had actually crossed my mind today, without any prompting by PPOV.

I went to a healer once – I suffered horribly from fibromyalgia. I figured, what the hell? I spent so much at doctors, I thought I just might as well throw away a 3 month allotment with some hippie woman.

It was a life changing, profound experience for me. Like 10 years of therapy in 3 days. I had an epiphany AND a healing.

But what I learned about myself is that what I hate most I can find within myself if I look hard enough.

And I thought I just hated bigotry and racism.

Then I looked deep within myself, and find that I embody that very darkness. I am angry with and bigoted towards lazy ass white people like the ones described. I think: Good Lord! You are born in an easy country in which to live. You have every single advantage that could be given if you are white and male. Why are you such a freakin’ idiot???

I admit I still struggle with these emotions, when I encounter the Joe the not-plumbers, or the Sarah Word Salad Palins. They piss me off.

I feel bad about it, and pray about it; but I haven’t found the way out of this negative ditch. I tend to compensate for it by spending time with what others would consider disadvantaged people who, through no fault of their own, were born in bad situations. I love giving them a hand up so they can fly.

But I have to be honest about myself, and I am a racist and a bigot towards my own kind. I was born to a daddy that drank too much, but who thought I hung the moon and taught me I could be anything I wanted to be, if I worked hard enough. We lived below the poverty line most of his life. Today, I am what could easily be called upper middle class. I try and use my position to help others – especially my “children”.

I am open to everyone, but if I see you throwing away advantages and being stupid in the process, well – you know how I feel. At least I tell the truth about it. That should count for something now, huh?
