Again, they greedily suck up everyone’s free contributions and cash them in for money. One would think the least they could do is treat their membership with a modicum of respect. IP addresses are tracked by all sites but they only show where your provider is based. For example, I’m in Los Angeles but my provider’s main address for DSL service is in Irvine so anyone tracking my IP would merely see “Irvine, CA” if they traced it. It ebbs and flows but for the most part, too many have acclimated to the hate and abuse that has become a defining element of the discourse on HuffPo. I’m not innocent on this, I played TrollBuster for a long time on the site and smashed and got a number banned but I finally stepped back to re-examine what I was doing and why. I joined HuffPo back in 2007 because I have a passion for political issues and was looking for a place to share a dialog with other folks who shared that passion. For a good deal of time, I felt I had found that at HuffPo, I had made a number of blogger friends who were clever and funny and informed. Then 2008 came along, as did a hedge fund buy in on the site and things shifted very radically. The censoring of posts came in harshly after Bill O’Reilly called HuffPo a place for hatred of the right. This alarmed the investors who apparently demanded that their investment be protected and the members should be locked down and censored. A period of severe censorship followed, there was a time when there were no current articles that allowed comments to be directly posted, all were moderated. This loosened up after usage no doubt cratered but the remnants of that is what HuffPo is today. Trolls have indeed figured out how to use HuffPo’s fucked up banning policy against regulars and progressives there (if there’s a way to subvert anything, you can always count on Republicans). Part of it is HuffPo assisted. HuffPo keeps trolls around because they want the conflict. The Trolls have learned this and gladly provide the service, also realizing that if they can harass individuals, they can rile them up enough to technically violate some HuffPo Terms of Use, then they lobby HuffPo through all kinds of socks to get rid of such bloggers. If a regular member and a troll say the same insult, my experience says that the troll is far more likely to remain while the regular member is more likely to be banned. Americans are so distracted by buying and watching things, focused so solipsistically on themselves and since the majority of us are not suffering from severe illnesses, it’s far too easy to for people to be disconnected and insulated from what life is like day to day in such circumstances. Of course, when health issues finally hit them in the future, the debate over health care will be over and all the wishing then won’t change the decisions made today. My best friend of 25 years died of cancer a short while back, it’s still surreal to think of this vibrant, energetic, witty man in just his 40’s being dead today. I remember the battle and struggle he went through, I remember his courage and determination, I remember his insurance refusing to cover treatments that they deemed “experimental” and I remember carrying his coffin. It remains unbelievable to me that there is doubt about health care reform being passed that genuinely protects us, how can these right wing assholes out there play politics with the lives of real human beings and not be condemned and voted out of office? And I say this as a witness to my friend’s experience. There is a kind of gentle humility and casual modesty that you exhibit as he did in dealing with the extraordinary challenges you have had. IMHO, it reflects a strength of character that no amount of modesty can obscure. You and your wife are remarkable, strong and brave people and I ain’t takin’ an “Aw shucks, ma’am” on that, it’s the truth. My proposition is that the most likely way to put progressive Dems in place of corrupt Dems is for a Repub to beat the corrupt Dem then for a progressive Dem to beat the Repub in the next election. The problem with our democratic system is that incumbents have a reelection rate of around 95% and Dem challengers to incumbent Dems in primaries are at an even greater disadvantage. So, would a Republican beating a Dem assure the Repub job security? Not if the reason the Repub was elected was due to Dems not turning out to vote for a corrupt Dem who opposed what was best for them. Run a progressive Dem against a Repub in a Dem state or district and the Dem will win. My question to you is, how else can we dislodge the corrupt, anti-citizen Dems in office who are responsible for blocking or watering down important Dem legislation? Good question. I do feel the responsibility to shout, “The Empress has no clothes!” at Huffington Post and here. It’s like when they interview the mother of a serial killer, “He used to be such a happy little boy”. HuffPo has changed permanently, grown up from a responsible progressive outlet to a MSM corporate machine that runs on money, titillation and outrage (with a reserve tank of hypocrisy). CNN is never going back to what it was under Ted Turner either. Corruption, like a diamond, is forever. Like shopping at Mom and Pop stores instead of Walmart, I think it helps to participate in other sites that are more earnest, like The Planet (he said humbly), to openly discuss what can’t be discussed at HuffPo and there may eventually be a “trickle down” effect since every site’s articles are propagated across the internet. Still, I think engaging others at HuffPo about this perspective is also a good idea. Just as the years of the public criticizing Fox News as the GOP propaganda machine that it is has finally worked its way up to coming from the POTUS, it can be pressed to become common knowledge that HuffPo is just a hedge fund and egotist driven enterprise masquerading as a progressive site just to exploit progressives. I don’t know that change is possible over there, their success grows despite their mistreatment of members and their increasing National Enquirer type approach to “news” so why would they change?
