Gifford’s rehab and the plight of others without access to her level of care

Sorry all if I’m being overly opinionated or offering too much commentary..but I still can’t get over the fact we can ACTUALLY discuss issues here!! We really can! Be still my heart! πŸ™‚

I was very frustrated as of late. The deletions…not even just my own, were really getting to me…especially when you noticed they didn’t violate ANY rules. In addition, the 100% moderation on any topic that could have controversial comments…was another issue I couldn’t handle.

I found myself getting very testy and making somewhat snarky comments as a result, which didn’t help.

Thanks for noticing PW. I noticed you have tried to remain about the fray…I was actually impressed a couple times with how you handled yourself!

I think you hit the nail on the head as to what bothered me most about the story, with this statement….”…is the failure to recognize how precious each life and person is. It’s also the acceptance of that failure.”

WE as a society don’t seem to have evolved in our enlightenment very far if we find this disparity, acceptable.

Throughout the article was the acknowledgment by the parents of the boy, and others that our system is not fair, and the acceptance of the inequities inherent in our systems.

I was bothered by the fact that his young man, lost potential for his life, due to a tragic accidental turn of events. The lost opportunities and LOST potential for a real life, is what bothers me most about our society works. IT’S something that has bothered me, since I was a child.

IF someone has the ability or potential, but not the access, we all lose, from that lost potential.

It seems to me, the healthcare debate, highlights what is inherently wrong with all of our systems.

It also seems to me, in our current social state, those who are MOST Machiavellian OR who have the best contacts are the ones who can benefit the most…not those who are most talented, or most intelligent…but those who have the best ability to manipulate are those who are society ends up rewarding with riches.

Excellent points PW.

Good points Funk.

I wonder though if there really WOULD be such a problem attracting doctors if the system wasn’t the way it currently is.

My point on that, is back when I was kid, Doctors were plentiful and they were well respected, BUT they became doctors as a vocation and earn a good income, but never expected to become uber wealthy either.

Back then you had more GP’s not specialists. TOday it’s just the opposite, but specializing pays significantly more.

I know a doctor, who’s family is very wealthy. He’s a GP, by choice. He didn’t need the money or care about the money…he wants to help people and that is his primary focus…not the money.

By making it ALL about money…Medicine lost its position as a vocation and many who SHOULD not be doctors ARE doctors and many who should be doctors, aren’t because they couldn’t afford to support themselves while gaining the schooling required.

Thanks Cher…you and I seem to be on the same page.

I think what you brought up was I wanted to bring this up here.

It is a delicate subject. But as you pointed out there is a lot of waste and I would add, corruption (not sure if that’s the right word I’m looking for) that perhaps create the illusion that providing health care HAS to be expensive.

I’m not sure if the disparity in care HAS to be the case or if it is the result of something else all together.

If I look at our healthcare delivery system as I would any other business entity, I see many things that don’t fit any free market model. At the same time, it doesn’t fit into a non profit model either.

As a an example…in what business are the costs to the end consumer completely hidden? WHY can’t the costs be negotiated?

Right there it doesn’t fit into the free market system, at all. At the same time in what non for profit or government model can those who work the system set their own rates and pay, based on supply/demand considerations?

Maybe that is the problem our paradigms as to what model it should follow are wrong…maybe it should have its own model.

I’m not sure exactly what I envision.

I think cost and payment are one issue. Accessibility is another, as is systems of delivery. Not to mention, preemptive care and access to those services. In addition, education on health issues seems another component.

So far the debate seems to have completely centered on how to pay for care. But I think until we address the other issues as WELL, we are missing the boat.

Lack of access to preventive care and access to education on health issues seems to me should be a starting point. Critical care and access to catastrophic care is another issue that needs to be addressed.

QUALITY of care should be another part of the debate as well.

SO many issues.

No doubt Adlib…the loopholes are a huge issue and so neglected in the debate.

It’s not the rate that matters, it’s what is actually being paid that counts.

It’s like the whole argument about income. ONE’S actual INCOME is not what one pays taxes on…but rather the Adjusted Gross income and the ACTUAL taxable income that counts.

I spent the better part of my life being a whiz (with the help of my CPA) at lowering my taxable income(legally) to that which made me look like a pauper for tax purposes. I know I was not alone in doing that…so to pretend we ALL pay taxes on our real income is so disingenuous. Sadly there are those who constantly use that argument, and many fall for it.

Thanks for the input PW. This is the kind of feedback I was hoping for when I posted.

There is another problem inherent in our systems too that seems to be neglected in the conversation, is the actual costs of the healthcare itself.

There doesn’t seem to be much logic in some of it, but a lot of lame excuses or ridiculous justifications that don’t pass any real cost/benefit analysis or business concepts. The system itself does not lend itself to open conversations as to the costs or any cost comparisons.

The health care industry, from insurers and providers seems to have evolved into something that it shouldn’t be.

I’m not anti business..but I am anti bad business AND anti-market concepts where they don’t belong. I think the whole health care system needs a complete overhaul at ALL levels. Not just the delivery or the paying for it, but the whole system.

I have spent the better part of my adult life, mired in the health care system on many levels…not due to career choice, but as a result of the serious health issues of loved ones.

My mother, cancer victim (died of breast cancer that metastasized into her lymph nodes and into her bones). That happened in my teen years. My mother was diagnosed when I was 16 and died when I was 21.

That same year,When I was 21 my now ex husband, was stabbed and almost killed in a robbery attempt. At one point, no lie, I was 8 months pregnant with my son, when both MY mother and my husband were in the same hospital at the same time.

Later that year, my son was born and had E-coli meningitis. So there I was in another hospital, dealing with my sons issues.

My ex could not work for 5 years and is now permanently partly disabled due to his injuries.

My next foray into the health care system came with my father…who died in 2003 (I was his primary care giver). Heart problems and renal failure due to WRONG medication being given to him.

In 2004 my daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy due to a trauma to the head. She was in a coma for 3 days. The last 6 years with her health issues have at times been a nightmare, dealing with her insurance providers.

My experiences with the systems have been an education. I learned so much about what is wrong with our systems from dealing with doctors, administrators and insurers. In all my interactions with the systems I spent a lot of time, interviewing doctors, administrators, nurses, PCA’s and others involved as well as researching everything.

I’m fortunate though, we have many doctors in our family, who I can get off the record info from.

My experience has left me SURE the system is severely broken, but not sure what is the methods for fixing it.

I think you make good points David.

Through my dealings with my Canadian backers I learned much about the Canadian health care system, as well about the tax system up North.

I think you are right about the politicians not having a stomach for it, but I truly believe part of that has to do with how inadequately most Americans understand their own finances OR how taxation should work. We have such serious issues with ignorance in this nation…and people don’t want to admit that the don’t understand or don’t know something.

It’s a serious problem.

Not to say the Canadian systems are perfect…they have issues just like everyone else, but there are some really good things in the Canadian systems which are very sensible.

Thank you for that post Choicelady.

SO much of what you said is what I was feeling and I couldn’t find the words. That was why I posted the article, I thought maybe others would be able to express what was wrong.

THANK you again. It IS unacceptable. Our treatment of the poor or less financially stable is a HUGE problem in our society.

In my mind it seems as if it has been systematically institutionalized in our media; the press, the commercials, movies, as well as through other sources.

There is something seriously wrong.

I really enjoyed this post Marion. So many good points you brought up, especially about our history and what it meant.

I think many forget that before this experiment started, the world was pretty much run by monarchs and aristocrats, who gained their positions through birthright not merit or ability.

The concept that one could rise from humble beginnings and not from birthright into another class, WAS what made the idea behind America great…not that they themselves were perfect examples of the ideal.

The social mobility aspect, was what was important. Sadly, that seems to have gotten lost along the way, especially the last 30 years.
