I think most are self medicating, and it many times is hiding something deeper. I had a boyfriend once who was a severe alcoholic, in and out of rehab. I took him to rehab 3 x and tried working with him, for quite a few years…I finally gave up…he had to deal with his issues which were many and he WAS self medicating. He contacted me last year, to let me know he’s been clean for the last 2 years…and getting his life together, a big part of his finally cleaning up was getting to those underlying issues. He’s not cured…but he is better and getting the help he needed. SO today, as I was reading, I took notes! 🙂 On Boehner and SSI….NO SSI is NOT the problem! If more Americans understood THAT, and understood the games the GOP is playing with the program and the FEAR mongering, they are employing…most Americans would tell the GOP to shut the f up! But sadly, too many don’t really understand government finance nor how the program actually works. Robert Reich….I really like him. He tries so hard to get the proper message out…but sadly NOT enough people are actually listening! Wages have been stagnant for decades and are now TOO low for families in the US. COST of living is a FACTOR, that the media, politicians and the public ignores CONSTANTLY! THIS drives me ape shit batty. Even when comparing our wages to the 3rd world, one needs to factor in COST OF LIVING. AND another annoying thing often ignored is the Compensation of those at the top of these same organizations who are paying rank and file workers next to nothing, in comparison to what they are taking from the pie! AND sadly most American’s just don’t get this! There was that poll not to long ago, which showed that most Americans completely UNDERESTIMATE the true level of income inequality in this nation! Another bone of contention…which brings me to the fucking media and When I say media, I don’t just mean the supposed news. I’m talking ALL of it, movies, TV, Magazines, Ads, etc. THE gamut of information that is provided to the public…it all paints a FALSE picture of the reality of our lives in the US. Goebbels would be SO proud! My favorite line on the media article was ‘Economic nonsense is being reported as fact”, while the article was referring to Wisconsin, this could be true for ALL economic news. GOOBLYGOOK, coming out of the mouths of IDIOTS without the slightest understanding of macroeconomic THEORIES is constantly being passed off as FACT! UGH!!!!!!!! Makes me want to go postal! And Eugene Robinson is right…this is not the time to be cutting spending…WE have a friggin consumer economy! Spending is key to keeping it going! Regardless who does the spending. Stopping spending causes further deterioration to the economy! YIKES! And lastly, I HATE the current GOP! I no longer felt it mattered what I was trying to accomplish. Like you, I was concerned about the 2010 election, and I worked my neighborhood and region. I was on the phone making 1000’s of calls and went door to door, and after doing THOSE things felt inspired and then I would go to HP and deflate. It finally got to be too much for me, and I realized I was fighting a losing battle. I left and won’t go back. The environment is positive and not constantly focused on the negative. While, I agree there are many who need to be open to other ideas…I use other forums for trying to encourage critical thinking. I’ve given up on HP though, sadly it’s turned into such a toxic environment, one which doesn’t really lend itself to open and honest debate. I agree with you about how we all developed some bad habits from over there and from society in general. TOO often, in many different forums and circumstances, people are TOO quick to anger or to assume things. I’ve been SO guilty of that myself…but I would suggest, recognizing that it is a problem, probably is half the battle to understanding how counterproductive such behavior actually IS and I think that conditioning has been the effect of many years of the “cowboy” mentality and propaganda being fostered upon us. Ironically, we were just discussing this very concept in my cultural anthropology class. I have a fantastic powerpoint on the topic. It’s very enlightening. Seriously. The thoughts and opinions expressed are so fantastic. I especially appreciated the back and forth between Chaz and Choicelady. Those comments, although they started out with some animosity turned into something really great to read and ponder. WE all are products of our own upbringing, experiences, genetics, family, social structure, education, sex, ethnic background, etc. As a result we all have the opportunity to present divergent opinions and perspectives on subjects such as this one. Change is often hard for most, and changing ideas that are so ingrained and in which so many have a vested interest in is quite difficult. For myself, I have struggled with change. Even if or when, I didn’t even realize I was fighting the changes on a subconscious level. I thought and believed I was more open to the change than I actually was…it was a real eye opener, to accept my own limitations in this endeavor. I think in some ways many don’t really think about it, they just ‘do’, do what they are expected to do and what they themselves believe they should do, based on many indoctrinated concepts. I think that inhibits the ability for many to really change their ways of thinking or even their ideas about life. Anyway…this was a fabulous thread.
