The Crime of the Century

These kids don’t have parents?

» Posted By ADONAI On March 29, 2011 @ 4:55 pm

choice, Nicotine on it’s own is one of the most highly addictive drugs in existence. Only heroin has been proven to be consistently more addictive. Though meth now appears to be moving up there with them. Most of the chemicals you speak of are added for preservation, packaging, and “flavor”. They really don’t need to make it any more addictive. Though I guess it doesn’t hurt to try.

Everyone else does. There are only 7 items on McDonald’s menu that do not contain sugar. Mostly on the breakfast menu. Why? Sugar becomes more addictive the more you consume it. Most fast food companies know this.

Caffeine is addictive but certain beans are far more addictive than others. But genetic manipulation has made it easier to assure the highest concentration of caffeine in your product for almost every brand.

Tobacco executives are dicks. But no more so than any other person looking to capitalize on our addictions. Of which there are many.

Pepe, I understand that but no one forces them to smoke. Today the risks are well known. Have been out there for decades. My grandma was told by her doctor 40 years ago that it would be bad for her.

And sure lung cancer is probably a long painful death but so is old age. And there is always euthanasia.

HUZZAH!!!!

» Posted By ADONAI On March 29, 2011 @ 1:51 pm

Pepe, I believe that. of course legal drugs like nicotine kill more people than illegal drugs like cocaine. More access.

But, like I said, the mortality rate isn’t my issue. Who wants to live forever? It’s the inconsistency in our condemnation of our society.

Amen, Pocket. Amen

Full disclosure: I was smoking while I read this. And I did start as a teenager. Not because of a TV commercial or candy cigarettes though. Peer pressure. The need to fit in. Now I just enjoy it.

It was silly for the Tobacco company to lie. But it was even sillier for Congress to haul them in front of a committee.

Why pick on smoking? Of course they lied. You’re attacking their product while ignoring every other vice.

Joe Camel is awful but make sure every beer commercial looks like the most awesome party ever.

Lung cancer is awful but diabetes is o.k. Keep that fat fucking kid of yours in McDonald’s.

Is it because smoking is the easiest to pick on? We did go bat-shit insane last time they went after our alcohol. And you saw the protests in the 90’s and early last decade when the government tried to get tough on fast food and all that trans fat shit. Though Clinton opposing fast food was kind of funny.

I smoke. People who oppose it should deal with it. And if I die of lung cancer in my seventies, who tha fuck wants to live to be 80 anyways?

To Censor Or Not To Censor

WTS, It really is. I’d love to see you expand on it. I feel like it would really open up new avenues of discussion and that’s always a good thing.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 29, 2011 @ 6:40 pm

My point is that EVERYONE thinks they know what is best.

The question is, what gives you the authority to decide for everyone else?

» Posted By ADONAI On March 29, 2011 @ 6:21 pm

WTS, It’s still a diamond.

What about the artist who painted a picture of the Virgin Mary and then covered it in elephant shit? It’s art, right? I defended it.

Total honesty, no. I don’t think the human body is sacred or the most vital part of society. But let’s get to my larger point. Doesn’t matter if you or I think it’s wrong to have that kind of “entertainment”. If a majority enjoys it, we have no right to take it away. Especially if it isn’t actually harming anyone.

I believe you care. I believe you believe this is the right thing. But there are far too many singular pronouns in there for this to be democratic. If we don’t like it, we choose not to participate in it. Anything more is arrogance. A supreme belief that you know what is best.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Sabreen, Well, peer pressure is a whole other issue. You’re not being influenced by your own perception of an abstract medium. You’re being directly influenced by outside pressure from a group of peers. And it is indeed a bitch.

But, in my case, boys will be boys. Kids screw up. That’s what they do. They’re kids. How they screw up is usually not important. What is important, it seems to me, is how the parent responds to it.

Kids, and I’m really speaking from my own experience here, have friends and teachers and mentors like sports coaches , but the parent or the person raises them is what sets the bar for them. Especially early on.

Whatever standard you present, they will try to carry. However fairly or poorly. And if everyone can just survive those teenage years, it may have all been worth it. Who knows? They’re fuckin’ kids. But, the kids are alright. The kids, are alright. 🙂

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 10:17 pm

Sabreen, I agree with you pretty much. There are more outlets today for kids to be exposed to this stuff.

But it still goes back to the parent. The first and last line of defense.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 10:04 pm

Sabreen, Music, books, films, and any other experience do not conjure up anything that isn’t already there. In some cases it crystallizes it.

These images and sounds don’t make you what you are. They aren’t real. And anyone who can’t tell the difference has a problem that manifested independently of it’s own accord.

Then the question becomes, is that worth censoring something? On the off chance someone may see it and their particular insanity doesn’t process it like everyone else.

And what do you base the less violent 40 years ago claim on? That was a time period of incredible strife. We are not living in unique times. Though many like to think we do. These are all arguments people were having 40 years ago. Is the media too violent? Should we be censoring things? What is acceptable and what isn’t?

And I don’t have kids so I can’t really comment on that. You just do the best you can I guess. Parents are the first and last censors. It should always be their decision. And you can’t really prevent everything I guess but have faith that you raise them right and I think they will deal with it the way you would want them to. It worked for me and i was a pretty crazy kid.

Every new medium is seen as the downfall of society. Video games are no different.

Movies received the same treatment. As did plays. Music. Comics. Books in general. But it’s all an attempt to explain behavior that has existed long before any of those things were ever invented. A means to excuse us from the animals we very much are.

So, basically, bad thoughts lead to bad actions and good thoughts lead to good actions.

As someone who was once an adolescent boy, I can assure you that is definitely not the rule.

choice, A good point 🙂

But it matters not what I think. all that matters is what I do. 😛

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 5:11 pm

HA!

Anchorman is awesome

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:44 pm

HOORAYS!!!!!!!!

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:41 pm

wts, I think so too. And, again, i apologize if I have come off as preachy or combative. That got me in trouble a lot at HP too. People tell me I have no filter between my mind and my mouth(or in this case keyboard) and I am constantly trying to work on that. I may not mean to be disrespectful but sometimes I am and I acknowledge that.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:21 pm

2ccp, That is also true. But NEVER should a minority decide what is “best” for the majority. That has never ended well.

Still though , the further down we push the things we don’t like, the more we put pressure on them, the likelier they are to explode in our face.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:16 pm

I gave it ten stars. It is a very thorough and well written argument.

I’ve had to pause several times to really think about how to respond to it.

Very well done, wts.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:06 pm

It may. But only the depictions of it in media. Throwing Christians to the lions never became quaint. But violent images causing violent behavior is another argument entirely.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 4:00 pm

Khirad, Amen brother.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:57 pm

Khirad, Megan Fox CAN act. Just not enough to ever carry her own movie(Jennifer’s Body anyone?).

But goddamn she is gorgeous.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:35 pm

wts, Agreed my friend.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:31 pm

It is. But it’s a very well done snuff film. I enjoyed it.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:31 pm

What I think is completely irrelevant. It is not my duty to decide what is acceptable or not. I am completely and totally anti-censorship.

It’s a two way road. You think you’re doing good and protecting people from terrible things you view as harmful, which is supremely arrogant, then someone else starts censoring something you enjoy and, how can you protest?

It’s all subjective in my mind except the freedom of speech. It’s the most important thing. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:30 pm

Not me! I REALLY loved Transformers. And G.I. Joe.

Still waiting for that Joe sequel. They can do better.

» Posted By ADONAI On March 28, 2011 @ 3:19 pm

Because I grew up with Transformers and aside from the shameful racist tones and truck nuts on the Devestator, seeing them on the big screen was awesome
