TVs were just out on the market. Movie cameras at the ballpark were, and movies in general, still a novelty. Neither had a world wide reach. Yet he was known all throughout North America. South America. His face was recognizable all over Europe. In Japan, where baseball was becoming a national pass time as well, his celebrity was almost as great as here in the states. And through Japan, many parts of East Asia. No internet. No global communications.
