It was quite energizing to be among thousands of my neighbors in this city who reflect how informed, creative, and principled they are. It was a real antidote to the ignorance, bigotry, and hateful cruelty that oozes every day from Trump and his MAGA cultists.

Writers such as James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ibram X. Kendi, and Nikole Hannah-Jones are just a few of the names found on book ban lists. Why? Because they are good writers and ‘touch life often.’

Each of these people brought 10 or more challenges against books in their school district; one man filed 92 challenges. It’s obvious what rankles Ms. Salinis; she is an illiterate troglodyte who couldn’t handle seeing a young Black female reciting a poem of hope for this country. Nothing in Amanda’s poem remotely suggests what she claims justifies having this book banned. She is an opportunist taking advantage of the dumbass laws DeSantis pushed through his State Legislature to make Florida an autocratic state.
