Vox Populi, our weekly live chat on the week’s events begins tonight at 7:00pm PDT. How influential is Vox Populi? Well, is it just a coincidence that John Boehner quit today before Vox started? I think not! Hope to see you then!

Slm- if you think Vox was eerie then, wait till Halloween!
AdLib7 days ago
like murph said the repubes in the house don’t have enough votes on either side to elect a new speaker, puts Debbie Wasserman-schultz in the middle
Harleigh

Ad – ooh can we have tricks and treats?
sillylittleme
SLM – how to do a virtual fire at Vox
MurphTheSurf3

Harleigh
Trick or Trump!
AdLib7 days ago
I heard on Al Jazeera that Paul Ryan is considering a run for Speaker. I’ve been smoking a lot of pot today, since hearing that…
sillylittleme
How much you wanna bet that some big lobbyist firm has a huge carrot hanging out there for Boehner on the condition that he quit now.
MurphTheSurf3
ad- good one! Haloween is my second annivesary of a stroke. It’s scary when you wake up half paralized.
Harleigh
SLM Paul Ryan…..Romney’s running mate…..the author of the privatization of Medicare replacement for ACA….that Paul Ryan?
MurphTheSurf3
Hey, hey, hey!
KillgoreTrout

Boneher is going straight to the lobby, let’s all go to the lobby….
Harleigh

KillgoreTrout
Murph – yup, it came from Michael Shure and I’ve never known him to exaggerate
sillylittleme
glad its friday man
Harleigh
Hey KT
sillylittleme
Why is Boehner leaving? Maybe because he’s tired of having to deal with a bumch of spoiled brats?
KT – its getting cool at night, when you headed to the cape again?
sillylittleme
Hey KT!
AdLib7 days ago
Hey Ad. slm, I’ll be there on the 5th of Oct.
KillgoreTrout
KT – did you request your absentee ballot? or are you gonna be home to vote in the primaries?
sillylittleme
i’m registered in Mass.
KillgoreTrout
i’ll miss the big vote in Ohio for weed legalization. I sure hope it passes.
KillgoreTrout
so, what is the orange man going to do with all his free time?
KillgoreTrout
KT – are you gonna be here for the primary? I think we may have a referendum for full legalization. it may not be until Nov, or the legislature is gonna get it veto proof before year end.
sillylittleme
he’s going to the lobby
Harleigh
Drink wine and play golf? Oh wait, he’s been doing that for years now.
KillgoreTrout
So will Repubs blow up the House and their chances for 2016 now that Boehner is leaving?
AdLib7 days ago
Yeah, I’ll probably be on the Cape for a few months.
KillgoreTrout
KT – he’s gonna hang out with Jeb! until the tide takes them away
sillylittleme
One can only hope!
KillgoreTrout
AD…..the TP crowd will push for Price, I think but the establishment crowd wants McCarthy….but the wrinkle is that without the TP folks, 40 plus, the GOP cannot elect a Speaker without Dem. support…..hooooo boy!
MurphTheSurf3
Wouldn’t it be cool if a Dem wins Boehner’s seat?
AdLib7 days ago
they will put a bagger in charge for lots of meaningless votes and Benghazi!!
Harleigh
Ad….but very unlikely…..
MurphTheSurf3
Ad, that’ll larn em.
KillgoreTrout
Ad – from the interviews I’ve seen with the tea pukes, ya. they have no clue that they may hang before this is all over.
sillylittleme
Some say Boehner’s leaving may prevent another shutdown.
KillgoreTrout
kT….it will prevent a shutdown…..there is no pressure on him now and he will use his powers to control the legislative process and go along with the Senate.
MurphTheSurf3
If I were in the house I want them to put the biggest bagger dickhaid in as speaker to insure a flush of them next year.
Harleigh
does cruz really think he can pull another shutdown and still win the nomination? They say he’s really intelligent, but I’ve seen no evidence to support such a claim.
KillgoreTrout
KT – unless there is a trick up someone’s sleeve, I think they won’t be able to help themselves
sillylittleme
Harleigh – except that a lot of people can’t take another fiscal hit…
how’s Uncle Ben doing in the polls? I would think he’d be down a few points after this past week.
KillgoreTrout
Harleigh – ya think?
sillylittleme
Who will replace him? The Three Front Runners: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R.-Calif.) McCarthy is likely the safest and most likely pick. He’s currently serving as the House Majority Leader, meaning he’s already managed to win an election among his party-mates in the House. McCarthy has been in the House since 2007 and quickly rose in the leadership ranks within his caucus. He’s staunchly pro-life, but some more conservative Republicans will likely view him as an extension of Boehner’s establishment brand. Rep. Jim Jordan (R.-Ohio) Here’s where the more conservative members of the House may find their savior. Jordan has a history within the Tea Party. He won his 5th term in 2014 and has previously advocated for strong-arm tactics to fight back against the White House’s agenda. He was a leader in pushing for the 2013 government shutdown over Obamacare. For Republicans who want to use that tactic as a sledgehammer against President Obama (and possibly Hillary Clinton in the future), Jordan might be a logical choice. Rep. Tom Price (R.-Ga.) Price currently chairs the House Committee on the Budget and sits on the Ways and Means Committee, meaning he has the chops and experience to handle what is certain to be a difficult series of budget negotiations with the White House in the coming weeks. He’s also a member of the Tea Party Caucus while still maintaining strong ties to the establishment GOP in the House. In a Republican party clearly split between obstructionist Tea Party supporters and establishment politicians who are more likely to negotiate, Price could find support on both sides.
MurphTheSurf3

I think that they may back off for now, kick the can…
Harleigh
Damn Murph, you are one fast typist.
KillgoreTrout

KT….something I had at the ready.
MurphTheSurf3

Jordon is a moron, have you ever seen him in committee?
sillylittleme
oh, OK. I was going to say….
KillgoreTrout
Murph – comes prepared for debate!!
sillylittleme
SLM….actually I have been addressing this question at another site.
MurphTheSurf3
slm, is that what we’re doing?
KillgoreTrout
KT – no since DWS thinks it unnecessary
sillylittleme
Oh snap!
KillgoreTrout
I kept hearing Gohmert today, but that was on C-Span. My guess, the baggers were given a script.
sillylittleme
Murph – the MSM says it’s a fait accompli that McCarthy will be the new leader. You think the TP will fight for that position?
AdLib7 days ago
ah yes, Gomer’s pile strikes again.
KillgoreTrout
The TP has no single candidate….this crowd can only negate and obstruct….
MurphTheSurf3
I want Gomert or some really reall whackdoodle as speaker. Howdy gowdy comes to mind
Harleigh
I saw TP loons on Yahoo agreeing that they want Gohmert as leader.
AdLib7 days ago
What about Gosar? Anti- Pope…
sillylittleme

This all actually makes my old campaign of Palin-Bachmann look kinda good.
Harleigh
KT – yup vote vote vote every single election!!!!
sillylittleme
Isn’t amazing that instead of at least respecting the Pope’s opinion but disagreeing, these Repubs attack the Pope like any Dem that says facts they don’t want to accept and demean him. How much lower can they go?
AdLib7 days ago
Harleigh – scarily it seems sane…
sillylittleme
no shit
Harleigh
We seem to do OK for the presidential elections, but we suck at the mid-terms. That’s why we have all those nut bags in both houses now.

MurphTheSurf3

Hey AdLib, it appears the repubs are also anti Speaker.
monicaangela
Slm – Everyone but rural white male racists. And they won’t bring you in a national election win.
AdLib7 days ago
Ad – they won’t even bring them enough votes for dog catcher
sillylittleme

AdLib, are you actually saying the the Christian Evangelical Republicans are attacking the Pope? Really.

not sure Murph. It’s always like that, with any pope.
KillgoreTrout
hey PPO
Harleigh
which one’s pink?
KillgoreTrout
I wonder how they are going to sell their message to the evangelicals now. Are the going to confess the fact that they only care about religion when it comes to abortion and gay rights…not all of that Jesus Christ stuff.
monicaangela
Hello PPO!!
monicaangela
KT….this guy is getting more than his share, reminds me of JP II in the Reagan years…..
MurphTheSurf3
the pope is a libertard on the side of people and science and shit!
Harleigh
Yeah Murph. I guess people figure he’s the closet thing to Jeebus that they get to see while still living. Just a guess.
KillgoreTrout
Harleigh, did I miss something, I could have sworn the Pope was confessing to believe in the teachings of Jesus. I guess I’ll have to watch his speak again.
monicaangela
KT – you never noticed? I always call PPO, Pink.
sillylittleme
Monica….given that evangelicals are backing Trump I suggest that the evangelicals are like most GOP….willing to believe whatever is necessary to take down their enemy.
MurphTheSurf3
harleigh, don’tcha know that the Pope id the AntiChrist?
pinkpantheroz
Harleigh..thanks
MurphTheSurf3
Just kidding slm. That’s a line from a Pink Floyd song.
KillgoreTrout
KT…appreciated
MurphTheSurf3
MA – they’re confused on the issue of mammon. the Pope is with them on abortion, etc.
sillylittleme
I believe you are correct Murph. So that leaves me to wonder why so many church folk vote for the GOP.
monicaangela
Murph, it’s the abortion and gay marriage thing.
KillgoreTrout
Monica…here in Mo…most church folk are ardently anti-abortion and that is a key.
MurphTheSurf3
SLM, I guess being with them on abortion and gay marriage is not enough.
monicaangela
KT agree.
MurphTheSurf3
Mega church folk are not xtians, they are blind cultists
Harleigh
Besides, everyone knows those libs are godless heathens.
KillgoreTrout
Murph, there in MO, and in most every other state many of those church folk have had abortions.
monicaangela
KT and that’s fine with me!
Harleigh
Me too Harleigh. I’m a Heathen, myself.
KillgoreTrout
So with Boehner gone, and Walker next in line, what do we think is going to happen to the Speakership in November after Boehner leaves?
monicaangela
Monica…but it was wrong! they have confessed their sin! they have embraced the Lord! Seriously- I think that in my neck of the woods abortion is very rare.
MurphTheSurf3
I’m heathen to the bone! muhahaha
Harleigh
Many religions are anti abortion, and anti gay marriage, until their adherents need them!
pinkpantheroz
You don’t get out much do you Murph.
monicaangela
MA – that was never the issue. I’d never have an abortion, but I don’t want the responsibility of my opinion on someone else’s life. that is why I am pro-choice. many of these anti-abortionists have actually had an abortion. they are hypocrites. they really only care about being rich or one day being rich.
sillylittleme
Monicaangela- Yep, anti-speaker and anti-sanity.
AdLib7 days ago
Ain’t it the truth PPO.
monicaangela
Monica….here are the contenders in the House….Who will replace him? The Three Front Runners: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R.-Calif.) McCarthy is likely the safest and most likely pick. I have never had an abortion either slm, I am also pro choice, not because I believe someone should have an abortion, but because I don’t believe I have the right to tell them they can’t.
monicaangela
shit! If only Bachmann had stayed on…
Harleigh
Harleigh, she’s anxiously waiting for The Rupture!
KillgoreTrout
Same, here, MA. As the Pope himself says, ‘Who am I to Judge?’ Well, if he ain’t, who is?
pinkpantheroz
Pink – the Jews for the most part gave up on much of the old testament. rejecting the negative and focusing on the positive. as with all religions, some haven’t progressed and are holding the rest back. the catholic church has needed a new millenial feel for far too long, as in they skipped an entire millenia. they are long overdue.
sillylittleme
McCarthy is a closet Tea Partier, and as you say hasn’t been in the house very long. I realize he is Majority leader, but I don’t think he’ll just walk into the speakership, not if the Tea Party crowd has anything to say about it.
monicaangela
slm, True, but the current crop of
pinkpantheroz
Me to KT, I can’t wait for jebus to remove all the assholes from the earth, I hope he drops them into the sun.
Harleigh
Monica—- in rural Mo. where there are virtually no abortion providers, and where the morality laid out by the preacher is pretty well accepted (which also permits the use of birth control…as long as the method is pre-conception)
MurphTheSurf3
Christians’ don’t encompass the real message of Christ, namely that His is the NEW testament. They’re still stuck to the OLD
pinkpantheroz
That’s correct PPO. That decision is between a woman, her partner, her God, and her conscience.
monicaangela
Harleigh – I hope he feeds them to the hungry polar bears
sillylittleme
but Murph, every sperm is sacred!
KillgoreTrout
SLM…depends on the Jews you are speaking of….both Conservative and Orthodox wrestle with the OT
MurphTheSurf3
Pink – and worse they misinterpret it
sillylittleme
SLM might make the bears sick too
Harleigh
Murph, there was a time in this nation before Roe v Wade that all over the nation “there were no abortions” however, we had to go to court to get legislation passed, I think they called Roe v Wade….because there were no abortions, and somebody wanted there to be some.
monicaangela
SLM, Absolutely! and make a right Royal bags of it as well
pinkpantheroz
KT…..I know there are those who say it but even in the fundamentalist circles that is generally snickered at.
MurphTheSurf3
As it should be Murph.
KillgoreTrout
Monica…..there were clearly many abortions, in part because there was so little birth control….again,I am speaking from my experience in Red Neck USA
MurphTheSurf3
not every orgasm deserves a name!
KillgoreTrout
Murph – jewish conservatives are mostly the wealthy but not uber rich cafeteria style, the orthodoxy is more traditional, except their traditions are mostly eastern european. the hasidim are our worst, they are our taliban, evangelicals
sillylittleme
That is correct PPO. Somehow many who profess to be Christians, appear to have gotten really tired before they got to the end of the Old Testament. Funny thing is, why do they believe they are called Christians? I wonder…
monicaangela
If sperm is sacred I sure am responsible for lots of holy sheets.
Harleigh
Pink – love that phrase
sillylittleme
SLM..yes….but I am referring to the rabbinic teaching more than anythingelse.
MurphTheSurf3
KT – the actual definition of rapture is orgasm, chew on that one a minute…
sillylittleme
I think Orthodox Jews are taught to always question.
KillgoreTrout
Well, they are divine!
KillgoreTrout
murph – yes but population wise the rabbinate is small, it is always the followers that muck it up
sillylittleme
There were abortions, and there were no birth control pills at that time. They were performed by doctors for the wealthy and by practicioners, bad ones for those who couldn’t afford it, by the way, some used potions they drank to rid themselves of the pregnancy, some used coat hangers and the list goes on. In the south especially, these things occurred. Just because you didn’t hear about it doesn’t mean it wasn’t happening.
monicaangela
SLM…yes.
MurphTheSurf3
KT – my point is that they are waiting for something they could be experiencing daily
sillylittleme
They probably do, they just try to hide it.
KillgoreTrout
KT – true the orthodoxy are very argumentative and mysoginistic
sillylittleme
Murph, If Jesus actually returned and looked at all the Testaments, I’m sure he’d scratch his head and say: That’s not what I said at all! The guys who wrote this crap were playing Chinese Whispers for hundreds of years after I went!”
pinkpantheroz
KT – no they are ashamed of it
sillylittleme
slm, that’s why they make good lawyers.
KillgoreTrout
KT LOL yes and no
sillylittleme
Pink – I think Matthew was closest to the truth.
sillylittleme
PPO….I don’t think it is that simple. This is one of my fields of study. Oral Tradition is real and there are mechanisms that weigh its veracity.
MurphTheSurf3
probably not, Murph, but I wonder….
pinkpantheroz
I believe you’re safe Harleigh, I don’t think the sperm becomes holy until it is introduced to an ovum.
monicaangela
Murph, are you saying the story of Jesus is true?
KillgoreTrout
brb
pinkpantheroz
ovum, meet sperm, sperm meet ovum!
KillgoreTrout
PPO—-like I said a complex subject…
MurphTheSurf3
KT – its more like a squirmy invasion
sillylittleme
KT- at its core I think it is true…yes….but remember I am a Christian Humanist so I strip away the mythological elements added, I believe based on my study, as Christianity took on Roman Pagaism directly.
MurphTheSurf3
I think there probably was a wandering preacher named Jesus, but just a man. I’d like to know why there is an 18 year gap in his history.
KillgoreTrout
You know I kind of wonder about the stories in the Bible. Imagine the fact, that all of those stories were written long after the death of Jesus. Also imagine, that there were many stories that were exclueded from the Bible, then imagine, that somebody sat down and wrote those stories according to what he/she could remember. Also, think about the fact that most books written by women were excluded. Kind of makes you wonder if someone hasn’t pulled a fast one.
monicaangela
Murph – are you aware of the variants of paganism in the Roman Empire? There were so many cultures destroyed. Few acknowledge that the OT actually begins with Avram. All the rest of the beginning of Genesis is from a Sumerian text.
sillylittleme
well it’s not like I wasn’t doing my very best Monica!!! LOL
Harleigh
KT…the way I see it, Yeshua bar Yusef ben Nazrit was a carpenter burdened with a widowed mother (and therefore unable to marry given his station in Galiean Society) who had an awakening (rather like that of the Siddartha Gautama) in his middle age….and he set out to be a preacher like his cousin John.
MurphTheSurf3
KT – I was taught that he was in the seminary, he became a rabbi and when he went home he got a real shock at how the people really lived. he tried to teach his people the scriptures in a way that would free them of oppression. we know how that worked out.
sillylittleme
I believe that alos KT, and as most people like you and others, I would like to know what happened during those years as well. Some say he traveled to places where those writing the stories had no contact with him. I’ve heard that during those years he traveled the world and that is how we came up with other religions…there are so many stories, it makes your head swim. Wonder if we will ever get the definitive answer.
monicaangela
SLM…Seneca notes that more than 200 cults were officially recognized by the imperium.
MurphTheSurf3

You all do realize that all the buy-bull books that get referenced were supposedly originally ‘written’ thousands and thousands of years ago way before Anglo-Saxons even existed, by non-white Middle Eastern brown men in now dead languages and that those were not their real original names right? Matt, Mark, Luke, John and Zeke?! Yeah right. More like Abdul, Habib or Omar. Most were wandering nomadic herdsmen with even less education than a 4 year old kid in Mississippi that also can’t read or write. Those ‘original’ storybooks were written by hand in a now dead language and transcribed and rewritten and re-interpreted by hand into other now dead languages dozens of times for dozens of different religions/sects or monestaries over the past 5,000 or so years resulting in massive disinformation to control the populations of those times. I got ‘THE WORD’ from a burning bush… or Hey! A talking snake told me…. blah blah blah. I remember decades ago that Jebus and the boys all rode dinosaurs along with Mathew, Mark, Luke and Zeke following Alley Oop around through the Middle East killing all those jungles and forests by tearing limbs off of trees, just as written in the buy-bull by all the phony prophets. All religions are businesses bumming money from suckers and should be taxed.

Its Hebrew form is Yochanan (Yoh-HAH-nan), meaning “Yahweh (God) is gracious”.

Excellent translations Murph. So during the translation of the Bible, something that had to be done in its entirety would you say mistakes were or could have been made. I speak more than one language, and have heard translations that can be interpreted in many different ways according to the level of education and the cultural background of the person doing the interpreting. Would that not lead us to believe that much of what we read in the Bible is misinterpreted. Also too, many of the stories of the Bible, especially they great flood can be found in stories of many religions and many cultures. It’s all interesting. I still wonder about all of this.

You should see all the Democratic conspiracy theorists on HP, so many “geniuses” over there making up all kinds of reason out of thin air as to why Boehner resigned. Occam’s razor, anyone? He admitted that if he had stayed on it would have meant a bitter civil war in the House between TP and Estab Repubs…which Boehner would eventually lose because the TP have enough votes to block his winning an election to stay Speaker. He’s been hammered by the TP for so long, looking down the barrel of going through hell with no chance to end up winning…so he quit. It’s really not a mystery.
AdLib7 days ago
Yep, and that patriarchy appears to have surfaced during the translation and rewriting of the events that took place. You do know that the translation, at least the King James version was orderd by a Bi-sexual, King James himself. I wonder what the Tea Party Evangelist think about that.

Murph – And the craziest thing about HP now is that their Facebook comments are ordered from oldest to newest. So the same old stale comments stay on an article no matter when you go to it. I was thinking about the reason sites had their own posting software and that it had the effect of creating a community. With FB the conduit for comments, there is no community at HP anymore, just various individuals posting one-liner comments on Facebook.
AdLib7 days ago
Do you think that is all there is to it AdLib. I did see an interview with him today saying that he had planned to quit last year, before Cantor lost his seat, he had planned to resign and let Cantor take over, but after Cantor lost his seat he had to stay on.

monicaangela, I don’t understand the logic for Boehner’s excuse so my rule of thumb is to doubt it’s honesty. Why couldn’t he quit after Cantor was voted out? What’s the difference? Why would he stay on just to quit later? I think that is just a story he made up to make this look premeditated instead of what it seems that it is and what he has otherwise admitted, he couldn’t take it anymore so he bailed. Without this story of wanting to resign earlier, he would look like a quitter and a loser. With it…IMO, he still looks like a quitter and a loser but to some Repubs he may look less so.

You may be sure that I love the Earl of Buckingham more than anyone else, and more than you who are here assembled. Monica…..one of the reasons that so many Catholic Sisters (Nuns) have “gone rogue” in the view of traditionalists is that they tossed aside those restrictions.

Nite all, have a great week. We still have a month of Boehner…

Beatlex – This isn’t going to happen but if Boehner was a more principled guy and had balls, he could take the next month to work with Dems, pass the immigration bill sent from the Senate and a number of other important bills like the Transportation Bill and leave office having made some long term accomplishments that made the country better. But Boehner doesn’t want to become infamous within the GOP, he wants to be remembered well ny the GOP (though he won’t be, he just thinks he will be) and he will do minimal things like probably get a CR passed until December and that’s about it.

Murph, you’ve noticed that too…they have become very militant of late. I believe we may have the opportunity to see a woman become a priest in our lifetime.

It is nearly 11:30 and time for me to say adieu….which is appropriate given the end discussion tonight…adieu…short for “I commend you to God.”

Ad- I wrote a column a while back suggesting Boehner do just as you say here….be a real leader and do some good and then bow out…but he has a lobbying job awaiting and that comes with a price.

Beatlex – I do think the Pope’s presence and visiting with Boehner may have helped him make this decision but I think he had already wanted to bail after the writing was on the wall.
AdLib7 days ago
Murph – Exactly, Boehner won’t be a great man because he can make more money not being one.

Night Monica! Sleep well!

AD AND BEATLE…one more thing….several color commentators have said that the Pope said to both Boehner and Biden “I am counting on you.” Biden smiled and Boehner cried.

It was a great discussion, sorry I missed a bit of it!

Murph – Great point! Wonder if Boehner will spend his retirement in confessionals, trying to catch up for the past 5 years?

Well Beatlex, looks like it’s that time, to close up the Vox bar until next week. Have a great weekend and see you here next Friday!
As a great way to share this experience, PlanetPOV is hosting a live chat (live typed comments) tonight to discuss the night's results as they come in along with everything else this election will bring and what folks think it will mean for the future.
It is long past time to stop playing Trump’s game of racism, hate, misogyny, and abject greed. If Trump is elected, he will end democracy as we know it. Harris will preserve it and work to make it better and far more inclusive so we can have it, as Lincoln said, a more perfect union. It will only happen if you vote.
