Ad–I watched Jon Stewart’s take on Joe Biden last night. One of the clips Stewart showed was Biden saying it was never right to hit a woman. It was a powerful clip. When Joe is on, he’s on. But, when he gets off, he really gets off! BTW, on a personal level, my granddaughter and I have been having conversations about hitting. Two of the neighborhood children she hangs with are brother and sister. The sister is younger, and is constantly hitting her older brother when she doesn’t get her way. My granddaughter, in her 11-year-old wisdom, keeps telling the sister, “If you keep hitting him, one of these days, he is going to hit you back.” Again, in her 11-year-old wisdom, she says, that the sister “deserves” to be hit. We have had long conversations about this, and I am putting the idea into her head that it is never a good idea to hit anyone; that no one “deserves” to be hit. I have told her to tell the sister to STOP hitting her brother, period. My granddaughter is one of those children who has to “process” information; so I believe that it won’t be too long until she has “processed” this info, and takes it to heart.

Murph–You’re right; hitting conversations are difficult. I remember when I was teaching, I had many a father who told me that he told his child, mostly boys, to hit back if anyone hit him. I informed the fathers that they can tell their children that, but that they had to be aware that if their child hit another child, they would be suspended. Glenn- I student I taught in HS many moons back was being jerked about by a group of bullies. When he wouldn’t respond as they wanted him to (i.e. he refused to kowtow to them) they threatened to beat him up. I was on a stairway and heading for the crowd….the young man in question…looked up at them and said- “Look, my dad is an attorney. If you hit me, I will file charges. My dads law firm will sue your fathers and they will probably beat the shit out of you.” The bully boys were so confused by this they just kind of wandered off. I got to the bottom of the stairs, congratulated him on quick thinking and said: “I did not know your Dad was an attorney.” He smiled and said: “He’s not. A car salesman. BS artist. Like me.”

ALL…I have a Scottish Story to share: One of the stories not reported in the USA’s miserable coverage of the plebiscite is this little gem shown on Al Jazeera America, my new favorite news source. Prince Harry made headlines in the UK when at a sporting event he reminesced about his fond memories of his home near Aberdeen Scotland, Balmoral and that is was his and Williams “home.” He said that he hoped he would not need a visa to go there soon. He laughed and then as he walked away said that he grew up on Scottish values and love of the highlands. For that reason, he said, no matter what, he still planned on wearing a kilt rather regularly. OMG! If you know Harry’s face…he is red headed with strong features and a big build. Very Scottish. Buckingham Palace had no comment.

In 1991, The audis were the key but they are Sunni (with a lot of radical Salafists, many powerful people, in their midst)…very tricky. And Iran is on “our side” the enemy of the Sunnis who are Saudi, UAE, Kuwait, Quatar. Turkey has its own fundamentalist problems now.

Back now. My thoughts on Scotland are that they were in a win-win situation. they knew they were on the moral high ground. No one took much notice until the polls suddenly showed the Tories that the Scots were serious, so there was a huge flipflop to grant them lots more autonomy, rather like the US States, to run their own domestic affairs. That was enough for the Scots to keep within the UK. there is now a movement to give ENLAND the same sort of autonomy that N.I, Wales and Scotland now enjoy, with its own Parliament, and Westminster becoming more of a Federal Parliament than before. the whole gist of all of this is that the Scots are fed up with the elitist Tories.
