Does anyone else pay more attention to the politics in Washington DC than in their home states and local community?
I’m ashamed to say that I do, except for McCain and Kyl, since they make fools of themselves regularly.
But unless I read something on the Internet about one of our local politicians, I really do not follow local politics and politicians as much as I should.
One time when we voted locally for whatever it was, and it was an interim election, the turnout is always so low, and this older volunteer let us bring our dog into vote.
They had a grand time pretending that our little pooch could vote and it was funny, but the older gentleman said to us that it was a damn shame that when it comes to things that really matter close to home, no one votes, yet they’ll turn out in droves for elections that take place over a thousand miles away.
I’ll never forget that, because it was so true.
The things that really matter locally, people don’t care, and they should, we all should.

Officials are asking for proof of Santa Claus’s birth certificate, since there are rumors he was born in Kenya.

Pinal County is the only Democratic and/or Liberal or Blue county in AZ and they tried redistricting us, but luckily they haven’t been able to do that yet and turn us Red.

Obama2008, that carp thing is really something. Besides being able to jump large distances (stories of people getting injured, sitting in their boats) those fish get huge. Saw a pic of one and it was over 6 feet and weighed 195 lbs.
Does the Detroit Free Press still publish a hard edition? They had some interesting Op-Eds.

I do believe the automotive companies and dealerships would disagree with the clunkers program falling flat.
E’Cat, the editorial on the war and Obama’s decision to send more troops they neglect to say that he campaigned on that action. Short term memory loss?
On the clunkers ed. Why so negative? What were the expecting the program to do? Solve everything around the globe? It did what it did, and it helped.

The LA Times has a great op ed section this morning. The articles seem to have a very progressive slant—not always the case with this paper. Here are my favorites:

The East Valley Tribune for the Phoenix area has an OP/Ed piece from Rep. Russell Pearce in which he is demanding that Arizonans prove they’re citizens in order to get taxpayer benefits.
He is also declaring that it’s time to fight for several things – to keep God in the pledge and national motto and the ten commandments on display in public buildings, and bring prayer back to public schools.
He’s battling against abortion, pornography, and insecure borders.

Then another OP/ED by Austin Hill that is declaring AG Holder as dangerous because of bringing the 9/11 trials to New York. He includes the typical jeer about ‘community organizer.’

Believe it or not, but the EV Tribune is considered the more ‘liberal’ paper compared to the Arizona Republic.
javaz, this is so interesting. This phrase in the first op ed caught my eye:
“The Tribune column was much like those cities in seeking to undermine legislative action by judicial fiat and completely misread the intent of the Legislature and the situation Arizona faces.”
Typical, isn’t it, for conservatives to dismiss the value of the courts when they are trying to push through legislation that has constitutional problems. “Judicial fiat” is classic GOP mastery of language. The whole article sounds a lot like a campaign speech — “The choice is now”, “What voters demanded.” Looks like Pearce is launching his 2010 race in the paper.
Austin Hill needs to take a class on constitutional law — funny that he starts out with “I’m not a lawyer. ” My answer — obviously not! And Deroy Murdoch, I don’t know what to say. I was looking for the facts he based his opinions on… Still looking. Could he be a distant relative to another famous Murdoch….???
If this is the “liberal” paper, I can’t imagine what the conservatives in AZ are saying!

Honestly, I rarely read the OP/ED pieces from our local papers because they’re pretty much always the same.
Between the two newspapers, we might have two or three liberal writers, but that’s it.
The EV Tribune has done an award winning series about Sheriff Joe and his abuse of power, as did the local CBS station, but the locals were outraged by both, and the stories taking on Sheriff Joe really were an anomaly.
They normally toe the Republican line.
Thank goodness for the Internet and PPOV and Think Progress, Daily KOS and alternet.
Without the Internet, we’d be thoroughly brainwashed.

Supposedly the last edition is at the end of the month.
They are a free paper currently, and only publish 3 days per week.
Last I heard though, they had a buyer, but they have not disclosed any other information.
Except for the Sheriff Joe series, they rarely publish many ‘liberal’ pieces.
Sort of like EJ Montini being the only ‘liberal’ at the AZ Republic.

In Germany, the papers are all abuzz about Germany’s participation in the NATO-occupation of Afghanistan, renamed “war” for propaganda purposes.
Among the german population, our participation in this occuoation is wildly unpopular, with a disapproval-rating percentage ranging well in the 70’s (SIC!).
But our Chancellor Angela Merkel seems to be hell-bent to kowtow to the will of America, to continue this mess.
Over the years, it has become painfully obvious to me, that we are living in an age of weak, indicisive and wagering politicians, who abhor taking chances for real change and improvement, and rather forfeit them than taking ANY risk of being, perhaps, wrong, whatsoever.
In former days, politicians were giants: Bismarck, Churchill, Lincoln. Those were the right men at the right place in the right time.
But today’s politicians are all dwarfs.

I think that’s a great idea. I think we should open it up for letters to the editor as well. In GA of course the big news has been the fall of GOP state senate leader Richardson. The guy is a real creep.
