Hooray! The portal has opened! Very sci fi, I must say.

The solitude is tapping into everything I don’t like about fantasy and scifi lit. Alone in the universe, no clue if anyone else is “out there”.

choicelady

I am here…..now there are two of us alone in the galaxy. Maybe others will come along.

MurphTheSurf3

We are sailing through the void, just the two of us… How are you? How are “things”?

choicelady

Well……lots of plates spinning……

MurphTheSurf3

Is the church joining? The Black farmers? Do you have residents yet on the land? Inquiring minds want to know.

choicelady

Ad texted – his daughter’s semi championship final went long. She was the reason they WON. Now onto the championship!

choicelady

He will be here soon.

choicelady

The churches in…..the black farmers are in…we are doing the good work of selling our local law enforcement and EMT services the entire concept.

MurphTheSurf3

Woo hoo!!!! I am SO excited for you all!!!

choicelady

We are also working with local county government which is looking to develop an official relationship with us.

MurphTheSurf3

That is amazing! I really do think this help a LOT to stave off the land predators, which WAS the whole point.

choicelady

I am not sure why this is all coming together but the pastor of the church thinks that officialdom sees bad times ahead and want the resources to serve those who will be facing the hardest of them.

MurphTheSurf3

You are securing land for the future and resources for the currently victimized. The pastor is right – the county wants to look good in caring for the disaffected.

choicelady

Yes….we are being advise to creat the trust as a sanctuary to meet the needs of the needy.

MurphTheSurf3

Perfect.

choicelady

We have two attorneys who specialize in land law involved too.

MurphTheSurf3

I will double down on ONE thing – it is imperative there be proper sanitation both to meet occupancy standards and prevent illness. With the loss of food inspection, proper cooking and storing of perishables is essential. Garbage cannot pile up. We learned that from just our city inspectors. Cleanliness counts.

choicelady

That’s awesome!

choicelady

Very good points. I will follow up.

MurphTheSurf3

We have our garden bursting already, but one of our guys will NOT clean up his space. I have to have a ‘come to Jesus’ discussion AGAIN with him. He’s attracting vermin that in turn are a threat to our plants.

choicelady

Drugs and neatness are the two reasons to evict.

choicelady

A lesson worth learning from

MurphTheSurf3

Do you have “residents” yet?

choicelady

Nope.

MurphTheSurf3

Good – prep makes it tons easier!

choicelady

One of the key issues is whether we are going to be “family friendly”. Another issue that is already on the table is how to winterize.

MurphTheSurf3

We have had a lot or rain and cool temps to go with it so weather issues are front and center.

MurphTheSurf3

Winterization is less of an issue in CA than with you. We need cooling. You need heating. It so depends on whether you have campers, trucks, etc. or tents. Electric heater are the ONLY option if you have ways to run heavy duty power cords, power strips. Campers etc. are much easier. I hope you CAN be ‘family friendly’. I’ve had a teen living here last three years with his father. Never had little kids though.

choicelady

You need to get an electrician in to evaluate your capacity and add circuits if needed.

choicelady

I also have several large buildings that could be modified to become cool weather shelters, cooking facilities etc.

MurphTheSurf3

That’s wonderful. As I mentioned, you can use those as “community centers” treating them like hostels – everyone gets in, but you have to clean before you leave.

choicelady

Communal living requires personal commitments to the greater good, and those are NOT American values. They have to be. My fave sign above a sink is “Do your own dishes. Your Mom is not here.”

choicelady

What are your food sources.

MurphTheSurf3

There are fairly inexpensive wall mount A/C and heat units you can look into.

choicelady

Not following your question on food sources.

choicelady

How are food needs taken care of.

MurphTheSurf3

Individual, Family, Communal?

MurphTheSurf3

Right now, with SNAP, everyone gets and cooks their own. If SNAP goes, yikes. Food banks. We are going to buy 25 pound bags of beans and rice just in case. Store them in metal garbage cans. We do have a full freezer we filled but will share. Chicken, etc. I wanted a chicken coop, but with bird flu, that’s dicey. If you don’t have it, that’s OK

choicelady

Right now it’s individual. It may turn communal, but if people have no money, they STILL have to eat. Luckily, we all have some income.

choicelady

All good thoughts…..

MurphTheSurf3

Food banks will become important.

choicelady

Our food banks are weak sticks.

MurphTheSurf3

That’s what I feared. Might be something for the county to beef up, bit with no fed funding, it’s much, much harder. We have a “senior gleaner’ program that sends people to participating retailers to get left over food, cooked, or supplies that would otherwise be discarded. You could do that.

choicelady

You could be your OWN food pantry and supplying with donations and “gleaned” non perishables.

choicelady

The principle that has to kick in is “Stone Soup” when people have nothing or next to nothing. You know the story?

choicelady

Living in the country there are very few crowd oriented services like you describe. challenging.

MurphTheSurf3

You would indeed have to do town or city “runs” to get stuff.

choicelady

I do know stone soup….it is what you add that turns it from a stone in water to a soup.

MurphTheSurf3

Everyone can put something in. People can fish, can hunt, can forage berries and wild greens. People can go to cities and get stuff from being thrown out. What is appropriate goes into the soup. Have a garden with basics – carrots, onions, potatoes. Keep dried beans. You have water? YOu have soup.

choicelady

Go vegetarian – spinach lasagna v meat. That sort of thing.

choicelady

Might have to have long-range runs to Walmart or whatever you have to get cheap stuff. They sell bulk.

choicelady

Those w absolutely NO money are going to supplement with help, work, service.

choicelady

Barter economy.

choicelady

There is very little “density” in my neck of the woods…..everything is scattered hard to get to and get back from.

MurphTheSurf3

That’s why you plan long ranger foraging every two to four weeks. Head to the big city, stock up, come back and store it.

choicelady

The church folk understand these challenges but have shared their frustration in coping with them.

MurphTheSurf3

Long range. Not ranger.

choicelady

Well, we may have no other options.

choicelady

The big city is very poor or very rich depending on where you are standing and it is far off.

MurphTheSurf3

You CAN use Amazon. they sell large packs of all kinds of things – I have condensed soups, 24 count, for cooking. that sort of thing.

choicelady

Where des your financing come from.

MurphTheSurf3

I put in tuna, Kirkland canned chicken, pasta, broth, condensed soups, etc. Well, the financing is hubs and I. But the guys have SNAP and as long as it survives, they can add in.

choicelady

Not everyone who lives there will have no money. But it IS essential you have a garden. Chickens if it’s safe. Whatever you all can manage.

choicelady

Much to think about here. How do you manage to keep all the plates spinning.

MurphTheSurf3

I HAVE NO IDEA!!!

choicelady

I planned ahead as much as I can. The rest is as it comes up.

choicelady

BRB

choicelady

OK. Just “Speedy” who can’t do a thing for himself and needs help. No money on my end? He gets a sandwich,.

choicelady

Who is “speedy”?

MurphTheSurf3

Speedy is a hapless but quite nice homeless guy. He once was a male model, isn’t at all bright, lost his looks, and, well, here he is. He’s quite pleasant, now I’ve cured him of greeting me, “Yo, Momma!” Told him I’d cut him off cold if he didn’t stop that. He did.

choicelady

His last name IS Gonzales, so his street name OF COURSE, is “Speedy”.

choicelady

AH.

MurphTheSurf3

My challenges are small, and I’m not very demanding, but I REALLY won’t tolerate THAT.

choicelady

I quite like him. I like them all.’

choicelady

Well…I need to call it a night. This has been very useful , a bit inspiring and a bit overwhelming.

MurphTheSurf3

It is a lot. Stone soup applies to “money in the kitty”, too. Everyone puts in what they can to get the group what it needs. But this isn’t easy, made harder if they pull SNAP.

choicelady

Keep me posted – I’ll try to figure out stuff. Networks around the country to ask. Good night, Murph. You are doing a great thing.

choicelady

Again, I appreciate your experience and silliness to share it.

MurphTheSurf3

Willingness not silliness.

MurphTheSurf3

Good night. See you next week.
