Steroids probably saved baseball. Most casual fans could never be ENTERTAINED by watching Koufax, Drysdale, Marichal or Bob Gibson in a 60’s style pitching duel. They want to watch HOME RUN DERBY. Owners knew it and so did the players. EVERYBODY looked the other way.
