Health Bill Basics

They tried to drum up some outrage this morning by talking about Afghanistan, but no one would go for it. 🙄

There was literally a revolt from the readership in the comment section. Pretty funny.

Definitely. it’s a much better process.

In a way, I’m glad that they make these last minute changes because it gives the GOP less time — actually no time because they’re off the air today — to spin the media machine.

Somebody’s got their thinking cap on.

They’re going to challenge the mandate. This has happened before, I think with both Medicare and Social Security. It’s a little nerve racking because, should it go all the way to the supreme court, we could be in for another nasty surprise form those five fascist jurists.

But other legal experts say the challenge doesn’t have a chance. So I’m going with that for the time being. 🙂

It sounds like Democratic House members have finally figured out how important this vote is — and there are enough votes and enough confidence to do this in a procedure that won’t get challenged. Which is great. There are already going to be legal challenges to the provisions. We don’t need the added onus of challenges to the procedure.

Timing is one of his strengths. He has a pattern of holding back until the last minute, and then coming on strong. He did it all the time in the general. He did the same thing here. He waited until the eleventh hour and then poured it on.

Remember it was just a month ago when we were all screaming about Reconciliation, and Why doesn’t the Senate just pass the budget provisions through Reconciliation?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

And here we are. With even ANOTHER procedure that I, at least, never knew about — Deem and Pass — and it’s all coming together.

And Reconciliation no longer seems like some magical promise that’s out of reach. Now we just take it for granted.

And that’s how health care will be — people will wonder what all the fuss was about.

He is also saying the public option is NOT in the bill.

I’m wondering — The public option is not in the senate bill — H.R. 3590. Perhaps that’s what people are looking at, and not at the amendments. I still find the issue with the PO very confusing.

Dennis Kucinich on Randi Rhodes.

He’s saying the bill will “enlarge the space for a discussion” about comprehensive reform.

I LOVE that framing. We should hold onto that.

He’s saying that the bill’s failure will shut down all discussion about health care. For him, passage is about continuing to work on health care. “We live to fight another day, here.”

You know, you’ve got to give the GOP credit for imagination and knowing their audience. Their best bet for producing a visceral and STUPID reaction to this health care proposal is to send people into default bigotry mode.

I think this vote is critically important for dems in the fall. Passing health care is going to be a tremendous motivator for voters to go to the polls in November, definitely. This is a really important vote.

But some dems are afraid because they are misinformed about how popular this bill is. And some are afraid because they know their constituents are misinformed about what’s in the bill.

DeFazio, however, is someone who unrealistically expects something better will be developed in congress if this bill is tossed aside. It’s very — I don’t know what it is. It’s unrealistic.

He sounded REEEEEALLY angry. Definitely a purist type who can’t see the good of the bill because the specific provisions he wants are not there.

I mean, the things he talked about are absolutely legitimate, but I don’t know when he thinks they’ll get passed if we don’t get a start somewhere.
