In the end I’m not even sure what started it but I saw familiar frustrations coming out and as much as I might have felt the tug to engage I backed off and left the thread as it. I can’t describe it but on reflection I realized two things. 1. I am a woodworker. I work with old woods, mostly those harvested and used in old buildings before 1900. They are beautiful pieces, old growth timber like you don’t see much of today. Still they can challenge you. Old wood is well dry and has taken its time to create its own shape, which is often contrary to your plans for it. I work and massage and cut and add little things to help shape it, and for the most part it is resilient enough to take the new form. Occasionally it fights back and despite my best efforts it resumes the shape it was in before. I grow frustrated, think of other solutions to get it to cooperate and when it doesn’t I am left with two choices. I can either force it, usually a disaster, or I can simply walk away for a while, accept the work I’ve done to the board was not going to work, get out a new board and start over. I have learned over the years the latter approach might cause some personal pain from work I’ve done to it but overall I’m better off to simply let it be. I feel that way now about my former home. 2. One night here I was speaking to my frustration regarding going back over there and someone told me that people who stayed and tried to work it out over there had their own reasons for staying and I should simply accept it. If they think they remain because someone needs to remain on the point of defending progressive thought then I applaud them. There are many reasons, spoken to me by wiser people than myself, people stay there. That may be one of them. What I read from Tex seemed to imply he was disappointed so many people left and I have read that sentiment “over there”, how “we” abandoned the ship. Maybe I got to a place where the ship was not worth staying on when there was another ship to visit that offered a more congenial place to share my thoughts and read others. I have learned more here in not quite two weeks than I learned in my last six months over there. And I have spent enough time “on the point” that choosing to disengage is often the best option for your mental and physical health. I admire those who stay, they have more energy or passion for taking on the increasingly hostile environment. Perhaps that is their calling, perhaps they find a small group of like minded progressives and post together. I don’t know. What I do know is I came here for dialog and perhaps some think we all agree too much. I don’t think we are suffering a collective group-think. I do see contention and disagreement. Here it doesn’t give me heartburn. There I felt there was no ability to converse with an opposing view. Mostly because I don’t think they were there to converse as much as stir the pot. I admire you and the others for taking your stand and for trying to be reasonable. As for the libs over there bashing I came to understand I was pretty miserable at times over there. I feel the same undercurrent of anger when I pass through there now. I come here, see friends and discussion and it fades pretty fast. I was over in the jungle when the protests started. I came back and saw a lot of blood and anger here. My best friend was bludgeoned in Chicago and still has vision problems from tear gas and a nightstick to his head. He tells me it was terrifying and he was certain he was going to die. I watched Kent State on TV. Couldn’t believe it. At the same time there was an energy then, a conviction that has been lacking since. If the protests happen here I don’t wish for bullets and tear gas. I wish for the energy and resolve. Nixon and his troops at Kent State remain riveted in my mind. I am not sure what would happen this time around, if the Guard was called in. Many of the MN units have done their time in Iraq and Afghan and they would be far less invested in more killing. The Guard at Kent State were more or less weekend warriors, imbued with an absurd sense of soldiering and macho – and scared shitless I’m sure. When they locked and loaded they lost their perspective, why they were there, what it was about. And they started shooting and shocked the country. There was not one damn thing fun about most of it. A couple of us old timers were reminiscing about it earlier today, mostly joking about the old days and how we’d need hover-rounds to last the day at a protest. I guess when you’ve been there you can joke to relieve the tension. I never loved the smell of tear gas and definitely don’t like the sounds of bullets in the air.
