Apache Jct sales tax is 8.9% so now it goes up to 9.9% and that’s fairly steep to pay nearly 10 cents in taxes for every dollar spent. I feel sorry for the businesses here, even though Apache Jct and Gold Canyon don’t really have very many businesses except for 2 grocery stores and Walgreen’s, but there is a Ford Dealership and I think those businesses will be hurt. People will drive into Maricopa County and Mesa now to buy a vehicle and I know that we’ll be going to Mesa to buy certain items to avoid the higher taxes and we’ll definitely be shopping more now on-line. People realize now that they were duped, if they’ve been paying attention and if they haven’t, they’ll learn it soon enough. Yesterday they came out and said that all the promises of cutting of education and public services will still be cut and the penny tax is going to pay-off what’s been owed. So, all the people who believed they were doing it “for the children” will still see their schools closed, teachers laid off, health care for the poor cut-off and police and firemen laid off. The local newspapers were trying to explain it all, but every article against the tax was regarded as ‘liberal’ media, including the Arizona Republic, which is definitely not a liberal-leaning paper at all and the local television stations never told the truth until yesterday. Turn-out was low on the voting, but more people did do early mail-in ballots and there are some that started screaming yesterday, once they discovered the truth, that they wish they could rescind their vote. With the state losing millions due to the boycotts, my guess is that the state is going to use the penny-tax for the lawsuits, 5 have been filed so far and this thing is going to go on for years. They are still going to have to issue the IOUs and it’s all such a mess and why in heaven’s name our state had to make things worse with the SB1070 law is perplexing. Our tourism industry was just starting to recover from the recession, and now it’s sunk and sinking lower every single day. And one of our great leaders is threatening to cut off electricity to LA, which is an empty threat since LA owns 25% of APS and the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant, but it makes my state look even worse and I hate that we are all hated for living here. I’ve been reading the blogs and people are outraged with Arizona and initially even people like my husband and myself were forgiven, but now we’re being lumped in and blamed for Arizona’s leadership. I agree with the boycotts and understand the anger completely, because I am angry, too, but I did not vote these asshats in! The museum used to be in the Goldfield Ghost Town, which is not a real ghost town, but a tourist attraction, but it’s still a fun place to go, if you’re a tourist. They built an actual museum a few years back and then-Governor Janet Napolitano even showed up on opening day back then and gave a speech. We’d always wanted to check it out but never got around to it until yesterday. It’s very well done and covers a lot of the mining history and history of Jacob Waltz – The Lost Dutchman – and Elisha Reavis – a well-known mountain man that lived up in the Supers alone and had apple orchards and vegetable gardens, and he’d trek down to Phoenix twice a year with his donkeys to sell his produce. It also has a wonderful gift shop, and I am a gift shop connoisseur! On the property are also 2 buildings left from the movie-set Apache Land – the only two buildings that survived 2 separate fires and they moved them to the museum grounds. It was fascinating reading all the movies and TV series that were filmed at Apache Land – Charro starring Elvis, several John Wayne movies and many more, plus Paladin TV series. They have quite the collection of old black-and-white stills, black-and-white photos of the stars and even slabs of sandstone with the stars’ hand-prints and footprints reminiscent of Grauman’s Chinese Theater out in Hollywood but nothing as fancy and the stars used sticks or something to sign their names. My father was illegal, my mother legal because she was born here, but that didn’t stop the government from using my dad and his brothers to fight a righteous war, and my mother understood the shame and fear from being German during World War II. My father and my uncles volunteered to fight during the war after Pearl Harbor, and somehow they all became legal after that, but they fought against the Nazis and Japanese, and somehow after that, they got social security numbers and were considered Americans, but let me say that every single time we went into Canada, my dad was held up at the border going in and coming out. I mean hours so we never went over more than 2 or three times. And when my husband was asked to work in Canada for Bombardier a couple summers ago, they held us up again, and did not allow us over, and it was because of my passport, even though I am an American citizen and was born in Detroit. But the company had to get us a custom’s lawyer and they put us through so much, and it was a nightmare, but they did allow us entry into Canada and us to stay for 4 months. Sheesh, we went over to France and lived for 2 years, and that was easy-peasy compared to going into Canada. Now things have changed, and I can actually get a Canadian passport and have dual-citizenship, if I so desired. She loved Hawaii and said that she never experienced a migraine there. If there’d been a way that we could have moved there, we’d have done it for her, but reality is not what dreams are made of. My dad had been to Hawaii after joining the Navy following Pearl Harbor, and I am so glad that he went back with my mom in the 80’s. I still laugh at the memory of my dad, who never wore anything but a blue dress shirt tucked into navy blue slacks, getting off the plane and him and my mom wore matching Hawaiian shirts of bright red and covered with flowers with leis around their necks. My dad complained of the prices of everything, especially food, and food for them meant McDonald’s. But my parents both couldn’t stop talking about how all the women, the young women wore bikinis everywhere, and my father especially liked that! We miss you and it was wonderful to see you again. I read a book recently called the Berghdorf Blondes – and if I’ve written about this previously, I apologize, as my short term memory is shot. It was a silly book, but it was enlightening. The author works for Vogue, and thanked the woman of Vogue – Anna Wittnour? That book, for as silly as it was, was an eye-opener. It was a look into the lives of the very rich, and children of the rich, aka Paris Hilton types, and what they go through in their very rich lives. They are shallow people and worried about fashion and men, and it was an amazing journey through their eating disorders and drugs and alcohol. Life is not easy for them either. I can’t explain it, as you would have to read the book, and I must say that I wasn’t jealous of them at all, but pitied them. It really was an excellent book, but there were things in that book that just pissed me off. Like how the very rich can hold charity events, and escape taxes by having their very rich lifestyles written off. Their clothes and even renovations to their homes can be written off tax wise, and I am talking about millions of dollars. The very rich, they are not happy, yet they feel entitled in that they truly believe that they deserve all the breaks, and only the little people should pay taxes. When you see on Yahoo front page news about 2 actresses showing up at an event wearing the same dress, that is very big for them. And they hate Hollywood, because that’s new money, and they feel slighted when an actress gets more perks than them. The book went into engagements, and how that is all for show, and then even when marriages happen that no one believes will last, because it’s all for show. They are not happy. As silly as the book is, it is worth reading. It’s an introduction into the very rich and their shallow lives, but better yet, it is an opening to their world and their very unhappy lives. I used to watch them with my mother and back in them days, there was the Guiding Light and Search for Tomorrow, and they were 15 minutes each with commercials for Ivory Soap and whatnot. My mother used to iron then and back then, I had an iron meant for a child that was an actual iron with the cloth cord and the small ironing board. My mother had me iron the pillowcases and handkerchiefs and right after the soaps, my mom would flip the channel for Bill Kennedy’s Afternoon Movie at 1:00 and that was broadcast from Canada. We saw the soaps go from 15 minutes to a half hour and then to an hour, and my gosh, when Dark Shadows came on, as kids, we’d hurry home from school to watch that. My mother and I quit watching the Guiding Light, and all the others – The Secret Storm, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital – some time in the 70’s, when I moved out, finished college and got a real job. Well, during our stay in Canada, I actually got back into a soap – The Bold and the Beautiful – because there was nothing on in that half-hour before Judge Judy and they played Judge Judy for an hour in Montreal. Anyway, even my husband is addicted somewhat to “The Bold and The Beautiful” and it’s only a half-hour soap, which is enough for us both – but what a silly, stupid and incestuous soap – yet we’re hooked. The fun thing with the Internet is that they have spoilers now, so I can read what’s going to happen before it does, and what’s even more fun is that they have message boards. Really, I do not watch it everyday, but I can keep up with the boards. It truly is a silly, and very guilty pleasure, but every man on that soap is such a weakling and whining a-hole, and I can’t believe that that show is so popular. I love reading their message boards, because I am not alone in thinking that the men on that show need to grow a pair. But the most hilarious thing about that board is how very seriously most of them take it. I mean, you’d think that you are reading a blog about politics – the passion runs high and there are cliques and there is the nasty that you see on regular blogs like HP or Dailykos. It’s hilarious and I love it all, because it helps put things into perspective for me. I mean, these soap people act as though the soap people are real and there’s anger and it’s so typical of political blogs. It’s an escape and soaps are on their way out and I can understand that, but they’re really not that bad of a thing. I do understand about the Gulf and the politics and every darn thing, but I am making a concerted effort to try to ignore it all and not think too much. I’ve enough of a load on my shoulders with my family and my husband’s family and it’s all just too much, but I’ve been getting back into the Karma thing and practicing the breathing in and out and spiritual and it does help. I cannot change the world, but I can change certain things. I can listen to people and empathize with their problems, while accepting that there is nothing in reality that I can do to fix it or fix them. Some times you just have to accept what is and I am learning that no matter how badly I wish that I could fix it, that I cannot. I must learn to accept that not every cloud has a rainbow. Life truly is a journey and I like to think an adventure, but as we all know, there is much pain and much sorrow and somehow we have to keep forging on because tomorrow is another day. Life also has much joy and happiness and I am luckier than most but it’s when the dark times come, it’s hard to remember that. I love the article on the Planet about – I Shall Not Hate – because that touches me on so many levels. I think that my lot in life is to try to bring people up and never down, no matter how hard it gets. And yeah, I know that there are millions of people that would change places with me in a heartbeat, but I would not change my life for anything. My mother always said to me that she learned something new everyday and told me that I think too much, and my father always told me to roll with the punches, because life has more ups than downs.
