Sue Wallis (R) stood up on the floor of the Wyoming House to state her opposition to yet another incredibly invasive and authoritarian abortion bill. Not only did she stick to her small government guns on the issue, but also publicly discussed a personal situation of her own that she had to deal with. I was very impressed. For example, I view SS as the most successful, anti-poverty program ever that ever existed. Certainly there are wealthy people that collect benefits that don’t need it, certainly it may provide a dis-incentive to some people to save on their own, certainly a reasonably sophisticated investor could probably invest the money on their own and build a bigger nest egg. Removing the fact that one third of all recipients of benefits are disabled or orphans, let’s examine the rest of us. A meager $1000 a month benefit for a retiree or widow/er is the equivalent to having a pot of money worth $240,000. I would need to have that much money to safely distribute no more than 5% per year, give myself a raise every year to battle inflation and give myself a good chance of not running out money. Even then I cannot forsee the variable of how long I live, how healthy I’ll be, public policy changes, household shock, etc etc etc. With Social Security, I have an asset that I’ll never outlive, can’t spend foolishly, can’t be taken from me, has a cost-of-living increase feature, and is available risk-free to my spouse at my death. It’s a big fucking deal to most Americans whether they realize it or not. I wouldn’t change one thing about how it is delivered. And with minor adjustments to the program, can last forever. » Posted By funksands On February 8, 2011 @ 3:10 pm Suggestion to Twitter Wrangler: When I (or anyone) tweets an article directly from the site to Twitter, I’ve noticed that the person handling the Planet’s twitter feed is nice enough to “favorite” the tweet. That’s very nice, but it would more effective to “ReTweet” it instead. The Planet uses Twitter for additional exposure. By re-tweeting, thousands of additional followers are notified of the article and may be more likely to check it out. Favoriting goes no further than the the two users.
