It is the largest and longest LipDub video, to date. This video was created as an official response to the Newsweek article calling Grand Rapids a “dy!ng city.” We disagreed strongly, and wanted to create a video that encompasses the passion and energy we all feel is growing exponentially, in this great city. We felt Don McLean’s “American Pie,” a song about de@th, was in the end, triumphant and filled to the brim with life and hope. Predictably, headline writers rushed to announce that Medicare will be “going broke” in 2024. This isn’t true. What the report actually says is that in 2024, money flowing into the Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI) Trust will “be sufficient to pay [just] 90 percent of the trust fund’s costs.” In other words the money flowing into the Medicare fund that covers hospital stays will be 10 percent less than money flowing out. Looking ahead another sixty years, the Trustees project that the Trust fund’s ability to pay all of its bills with revenues dedicated to HI is projected “to decline slowly to 75 percent in 2045, and then to rise slowly, reaching 88 percent in 2085.” In other words, in 2085 Medicare still will be able to cover 88 percent of hospital costs–which means that, in theory, the other 12 percent would come out of general revenues. But that is not likely to happen. So Medicare is able to pay 88% of costs until 2085? If we change NOTHING? Provenge a three-treatment prostate immunotherapy treatment was approved for use by the FDA in 2009. It costs 31,000 a dose which adds up to a total cost of 93K. It’s proven to extend the life of someone with advanced prostate cancer by 4 months. Understandably the CMS debated long and hard whether or not it would cover the cost of an extremely expensive medication that merely extends life a very little bit further. Ultimately it has decided to do so. A) Another examply of the debacle that is Medicare Part D. Medicare cannot negotiate the price of this medication down. With Prostate cancer so prevelent, this could cost Medicare billions. B) This is the very type of thing that new provisions in Obamacare are supposed to sniff out and review for necessity. What’s interesting is that Medicare is going to leave it up to regional decison-makers whether or not they’ll cover the cost of the medication for NON-advanced prostate cancer, which the drug has proven to have no effect on. That could cost untold billions. C) This is the type of Medicare discussion that should be occuring. My opininon about this subject is split. Why not cover a medication that has the success ratio Provenge does. Other immunotherapy drugs with a lower success ratio are covered. But at the same time this seems to be an example of obvious quality control issues that should be part of a comprehensive review of an incredibly expensive, incredibly important program. If Dems were smart they would trumpet the cost of this drug in speeches and ads as an example of the failed and fraudulent Medicare D french kiss that Big Pharma got. What an easy way to save billions of dollars simply by negotiating down the cost of cutting edge drugs.
