Reporters from Mobile, Alabama’s Press-Register loaded into a boat Tuesday to inspect the site. Corporations get their risk back-stopped through the government, and use the government to grease the wheels of commerce and industry both here and abroad. In return, they agree to treat their employees reasonably well and treat the communities they exist in reasonably well enough to keep people off of the streets and somewhat content. The employees in return elect the aristocracy to positions of power to make sure the wheels of commerce and industry stay greased. All in all not a bad deal for all involved, at least comparatively with other nations historically. The problem is that someone got greedy and the social contract was broken. What will emerge? Democrats, progressives, liberals – whatever you want to call them – should never make any apologies for championing women’s rights and civil rights, for insisting on greater accountability in government, for championing civil liberties. But some of the caricatures of the left as being out of touch, snotty, self-righteous-there have been times when those caricatures were justified. And Bill Clinton did a lit to make Democrats seem like they were in touch with the the ordinary aspirations of a great number of Americans. That, I think, stopped the hemorrhaging of independent voters and Reagan Democrats into the Republican Party, and gave us the space and the opportunity to start reaching out to them. Insurance and drug companies make out very well in this plan, and I can’t see a SCOTUS that has a nearly perfect corporate favorability record ruling against that.
