Washington state is set to become the seventh in the country to legalize gay marriage, according to a report Monday.

Democratic Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen announced she would be the 25th vote needed to pass the same-sex marriage bill out of the state Senate, The Associated Press reported Monday. The Washington state House already has the necessary support for the measure, and Gov. Chris Gregoire publicly announced her support for gay marriage earlier this month.

Kale is pretty easy. Separate and wash the leaves and then dry them and lay them out on a piece of parchment paper on a large sheet pan or cookie sheet. Brush with olive oil, and grind some sea salt and black pepper on top of them. Cook at 300 degrees for 20 mins, and presto! Kale chips. Awesome snack. Even my kids eat it. What’s also cool is to break up the chips and add them to soup. Gives an interesting smoky taste to broths. Rutabagas? Can’t help you.

Recipe of the Month: Cauliflower??? Yep!

Pre-heat oven to 375F (190C)

Take 1 LARGE Cauliflower head and remove the greens/core

Cut into 8 or so wedges (so they’ll lay flat)

Toss gently in a bowl with equal parts olive oil and WHITE balsamic vinegar.

Lay flat on cookie sheet.

Turn every 12 minutes with tongs, (yes I know) until golden brown. (force yourself to let it turn brown, takes about 40-ish minutes)

Sprinkle with fresh parsley, Reggiano parmesan, and white/golden raisins.

Enjoy!

Murph, the position, given his background seems to be have been given due to other reasons than his experience in the financial industry. My guess is that it was due to his connections and influence to govt., or perhaps his organizational ability rather than any specific skill in the arena of alternative or other types of investing, which his background seems to hold none of. I would like to explore his statement in response to Bernie Sanders during his confirmation hearing:

“Jacob “Jack” Lew, Obama’s nominee to lead the Office of Management and Budget, the White House agency entrusted with ensuring that federal regulations reflect the president’s agenda, was asked Thursday during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Budget Committee by Sen. Bernie Sanders whether he believed that the “deregulation of Wall Street, pushed by people like Alan Greenspan Robert Rubin, contributed significantly to the disaster we saw on Wall Street.”

Lew, a former OMB chief for President Bill Clinton, told the panel that “the problems in the financial industry preceded deregulation,” and after discussing those issues, added that he didn’t “personally know the extent to which deregulation drove it, but I don’t believe that deregulation was the proximate cause.”

That said, the rest of his background seems particularly suited for the position.

Murph: Yes. Here’s what I like about his past:

“From 1979 to 1987 he was a principal domestic policy advisor to House Speaker Tip O’Neill, where he served at the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee as Assistant Director and then Executive Director. There he was responsible for domestic and economic issues including Social Security, Medicare, budget, tax, trade, appropriations, and energy issues.”

He also drafted the Clinton Health Care plan in ’94.

It looks like his stint at Citigroup was based around his experience with organization, staffing, and policy-making rather than his investment experience, of which it seems he has none.

My original take on this guy was more critical than he deserved.

That’s just it, I don’t think we need to default to someone with experience in the banking industry or on Wall Street in order to keep the trains running.

Why not someone like John Podesta? Chicago guy, former Chief of Staff for Clinton, heads up the Center for American Progress now. His lobbying firm is a little cozy with corporate America, but he’s not bad. He may not want the job, but guys/gals like him exist.

What about Pete Rouse, the interim COS after Rahm left?

Or Rick Kessler? Moderate green lobbyist? Former chief of Staff for John Dingel?

There are a few COS that haven’t been oil guys or bank guys in the last 40 years. Surely it isn’t that hard to find one.

That said, Mr. Lew looks like Mother Theresa compared to the Murderers Row of Rove, Baker, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Sununu, Haig, Regan, and Haldeman.

Comparatively he looks pretty damn good. Okay, I feel a little better. 🙂

Cher, good riddance. The guy was invisible for the last 6 months. One less banker, lawyer, former head of Fannie Mae in the administration.

Being Commerce Sec. during the giant outsource-apolooza in the late 90’s didn’t endear me to him either.

Under-reported in the generally positive jobs report today is the increase in the average workweek per worker.

This increased from 34.3 hours to 34.4 hours per week.

That might not seem like a lot, but it translates into 320,000 jobs. In other words, had employers kept the workweek unchanged, they would have needed to hire more than 500,000 workers for the month instead of just 212,000.

Kes, worker productivity has never been higher, labor costs have been dropping, wages have remained stagnant with a slight decline. Workers aren’t happy right now, but they are happy to have a job. At some point that tips over into more hiring. I hope its soon.

Adonai, I felt initially that this situation was pretty cut and dried, but now I’m not so sure. One challenge is that the President has already publicly said that he feels the private is guilty, which is going to be hard for any hearing to ignore.

Is he a traitor? I don’t know if I believe that. Is he guilty? Probably. I certainly think that almost 2 years of detention before a hearing is a bit excessive, especially if the case being prepared by the DOD is simply intended to court-martial him rather than punish him with jail time or the death penalty.

I think I may have more issue with his alleged treatment and processing during confinement than with the punishment that he will likely receive.

Whatever the outcome, its an ugly situation.
