Unfortunately because all of these countries are tied together so closely, Greece has been stuffed into the cracks of the dike to preclude a run on Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. If Greece pulls out of the EU and/or gets booted out, these countries are next. IMO trying to coordinate FIVE defaults simultaneously without chaos breaking out would be really hard. What’s frustrating is that they have a template of how true austerity has gone for one country: Latvia In 2008 Latvia tried REAL austerity, AND kept their currency pegged to the Euro. What’s happened since? 1. 20% unemployment (down to 14% now) The only reason the slide stopped is the government finally started to spend money again. Was it worth it? There have been a lot of countries that have faced extreme economic calamity over the last 25 years. The ones that had the ability to devalue their currency and partially default on their obligations recovered far more quickly than their counterparts. What’s even worse, is once the problem with Greece is papered over, (which I think it will be) the bedrock problem with the Euro hasn’t changed: There is currency union but no fiscal union backing it. Greece made its own mess. Their government should have been better stewards of their people’s trust, the people of the country should have at some point realized that full-blown gold-plated retirement at 50 was probably not sustainable (though show me ANY people in history that were given something for nothing by their govt. and declined. See: Iraq war and tax cuts) They joined the EU and accepted all of the benefits and disadvantages that come with making that decision. Their govt. hired Goldman to help them hide their debt problems The Greek people are going to suffer The Greek govt. is going to get booted The German people get left holding the bag The German govt. is going to get booted Funny how the only party in all of this, the banks, who hire armies of underwriters to assess risk on loans are the only ones who are going to walk away nearly whole on this mess. Gangrenous Eurozone forces withered Greeks to chop off own arm and feed to zombie banks. That sounds like a winning solution!! And to top it off, the very measures being forced upon Greece virtually guarantee they won’t EVER pay the money back. Brinker, who founded the foundation in memory of a sister who died from breast cancer, was the Chief Protocol Officer for the United States from 2007-2009 under the George W. American Jessica Buchanan, 32, and a 60-year-old Dane, Poul Thisted, were working for a Danish relief organization in northern Somalia when they were kidnapped last October. U.S. officials described their kidnappers as heavily armed common criminals with no known ties to any organized militant group. According to the U.S. officials, two teams of Navy SEALs landed by helicopter near the compound where the two hostages were being held. As the SEALS approached the compound on foot gunfire broke out, the U.S. officials said, and several of the militants were reportedly killed. There is no word that any of the Americans were wounded. As the president entered the House chambers to give his State of the Union Speech, he pointed to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta standing in the crowd and said, “Leon. Good job tonight. Good job tonight.” The president made no mention of the hostage rescue, but finished his speech with a reference to the killing of Osama bin Laden last May in a similar operation to the one conducted by Navy SEALs Tuesday night.
