Time Out for O/T – Vol. 18

Mitt Romney: Mayor of fake Rock Ridge

» Posted By funksands On May 3, 2012 @ 4:29 pm

Bito, that is good news. The DCCC came out today and updated their “in play” list to a total of 75 races they believe they have realistic chance of winning, with roughly 2/3 of them being straight takeaways from sitting R’s.

Romney To Travel Back In Time To Kill Liberal Versions Of Himself

Hey gang! FYI I am going to have to go dark for a few weeks. Things here are starting to spiral out of control and I have got to hunker down for a while. The street fondu business is a cutthroat one. 😉

I know that you’ll miss my fart jokes, but I’ll be back soon!

KT 🙂 After all that is the Planet official motto:

19 point swing in just 4 MONTHS!!

I wonder what happened? 🙂

I think this is HUGE. Recent Gallup poll of Independent Women in swing states:

That was too deep for me. I preferred “25 athletes that have lost their mind”

The GOP is all in. In the last year they’ve made it very clear that no lie is too big nor told too often.

To me the goal is simply to lie enough that the waters get muddied enough that Americans don’t know what or who to believe and stay home in November.

The clock is ticking and they have abandoned all pretense.

Today is World Autism Awareness Day

I’d like everyone here to be aware of Savannah Nicole Logsdon who is an ASD adult.

I’ve included a link to a post she wrote in her blog Cracked Mirror in Shallot about her experience at Occupy DC (which really was a secondary issue) but also about…I can’t even explain it, but I am deeply deeply impressed with her.

“I am stimming 1000 revolutions a minute when I go out and stim at a protest. I’m being Autistic, fat, disabled, queer, poor, covering, and many other things in public when I am in public, and being visible here is bringing all of those things out and into a space where revolution can happen. I am speeding our revolutions while joining their revolutions, even if it is only that tiny amount that visibility brings.

So yes, I rock (and flap, and…) 1000 revolutions a minute. We all do, when we dare to be who we are without apology, and dare to confront that which tells us we shouldn’t exist or aren’t worthy. We do when we dare to exist freely as people with disabilities, as Autistics, as all of the things we are.

We are a 1000 revolutions a minute.”

Thanks for indulging me.

Khirad, funny you should say that, it’s what the photo effect that I used is called. “Parisian”

Ad, I read a great article in Mother Jones about how and why political beliefs develop and then harden. What are the dynamics of that process? One of the more interesting findings from a study of this is that the MORE formal education one has the MORE partisan and entrenched your political belief system becomes. This was true of both liberals and conservatives, but for conservatives it was really stark.

Everyone, according to the study’s authors, engages in some form of “motivated reasoning” which takes information and figures out how to stretch it and shape it around a pre-conceived belief structure. It’s normal.

But apparently the more formal education one has, it does not make you MORE amenable to changing a position, but rather less so because one is more ABLE to craft an argument to refute.

Take global warming. After showing the study groups reams of information from scientists and organization showing seemingly indisputable truth about climate change being real and being impacted by man, something like 25-30% of the conservatives in the study with a high-school education or less changed their opinion on the topic. The higher the education level of the conservative, the LESS likely they were to change their mind.

I’ll find that article and study, though I’m sure you can track it down pretty quickly. How scientific was it? Don’t know, but it was interesting.

Khirad, I see that Iran is attempting to obtain weapons of mass healthcare coverage. This cannot stand.

Bito, 16 year low in US demand. Our domestic oil companies are selling it overseas so they can keep their profits up.

» Posted By funksands On March 28, 2012 @ 8:43 pm

Exactly. Charming and quirky. 🙂 Militia types are probably not welcome on a show like that.

» Posted By funksands On March 27, 2012 @ 10:26 pm

Its actually an interesting show. The people on the show are quite charming. Far less harmless than the guys in suits actively trying to end the world.

The top marginal rate was raised from 31% in 1992 to 40% in 1993.

The US economy then proceeded to average 4.5% annual GDP growth rate year over year until the year 2000.

When the top tax rate was cut from 40% to 35% in 2003.

The US economy then proceeded to average 3% annual GDP growth rate year over year until the end of 2007.

Thereby proving to Republicans that tax cuts on the top-earning taxpayers create more growth.

Nirek, they don’t love the fetus. They simply use it to excuse acting like the fanatical nutjob dickheads that they are.

CL a friend of mine is going through this with her 7 year old. She’s blogging about her and her son’s experience through all of this. In very great detail. You might find it instructive. (Grasping at straws)

If you are interested I can email you the link.

CL, Rather than attacking his beliefs, which no 19 year old reacts well to, I might just ask how he came to his opinion about the medical establishment. And from there how he came to find the cure that he has at least mentally committed to?

I’ve found that the more questions you can ask about his beliefs (without offering criticism or opinion of your own) the more he’ll be forced to examine how he got to this point. Often, people will re-think their positions if they are forced to re-trace their steps like this.

I don’t envy your task, but I admire you for taking it on.

Bito, it is really good to see you again. Hope all is reasonably well with you. I think your suggestion is an excellent one.
