This tells me that new Walker turnout increased at an EQUAL rate to new Barrett in Dem districts and EXCEEDED new Barrett turnout in GOP districts. My takeaway? My bet is that if Walker faced recall a year ago he probably would have lost. Dems, liberals and moderates were furious and conservatives didn’t have much to say in the hot and heavy of the protests. What Walker and his shadow donors seems to have done a good job doing is to the make the recall about something bigger. Making it a symbol of a recall against conservatism itself. Making it a mythical struggle of one man against the forces of darkness. Perhaps that was the more compelling storyline at the end of the day. The political discussion around the unemployment rate is fascinating. There hasn’t been any legislation that I can recall to come out of Congress that would impact jobs in over 9 months. Why would the President receive blame for today’s report? Why would he receive any credit if the the report had been good? The private sector is doing all the lifting in the economy right now. The Legislative Branch is paralyzed (Senate) and crazy/lazy (House). Until that changes somehow, the private sector and to a lesser extent individual states are going to have to do all the work. All of these measurements are based on a % of GDP. When Obama took office, GDP had been in a free-fall, which would automatically make those tax, spending and deficit numbers bigger. Since Obama has taken office, GDP has grown 2-3% a year on average, which makes these numbers smaller.
