Sally, the meme of Republicans being better for debts and deficits is still so strong. Its astonishing. That could be the biggest coupe that the right ever pulled.

Despite 80% of our current debt being run up by Republicans

Despite Democratic Presidents reducing the debt/gdp ratio EVERY term since FDR (including Obama) and the GOP only doing in two terms (Nixon and Eisenhower once each)

Despite the CBO scoring Romney’s economic plan as nearly TWICE as bad for our debts and deficits as CURRENT LAW

The GOP is still viewed as the party of “fiscal responsibility”.

When the hell is that going to change?

TAXES ARE OUT OF CONTROL!!!

If you were married in 1988, during the waning glow of the glorious Reagan era, and made $70K a year your total tax paid would have been $15,732 for an effective rate of 22%

If you were married in 2012 and made $70K a year your total tax paid would have been $9,735 for an effective rate of 13.7%

President Obama would like to see those rates stay where they are at for another year, BUT IF THEY DON’T GET EXTENDED what happens?

Some comments from a conversation a PA attorney and I were having about their new voter ID law:

“PA “nominally” provides free voter ID cards. However the poll tax comes in from 2 secondary aspects. First of all, you must have a certified copy of your birth certificate. PA charges $10.

And one has to: (1) identify and contact the appropriate government entity to get the form to fill out; (2) fill out the form; (3) come up with the $10 and postage to return with the form. If you are a senior citizen who was born in the first half of the 20th century in the deep South, and/or were black, and particularly if you were born at home, it’s unlikely your birth was even recorded.

Once you have that certified copy of your birth certificate, you have to find out where the nearest state Division of Motor Vehicles office is which provides photo IDs and then find some way to get yourself there during their office hours.

Speaking for Allegheny County/Pittsburgh, bus transportation is de minimis. The terrain has many steep hills, such that for me, for example, I would have to walk one mile down a 30 degree sloped roadway, with NO sidewalks, and with no shoulder for most of that distance – just to get to a bus stop. There is only bus service during the morning & evening rush hours. It’s also gotten very hard, not to mention expensive to get taxi service in the city OR the suburbs.”

Sounds simple enough to me. What’s the harm? 🙁

Thanks Choice. Affordability hasn’t been an issue. The provisions to let my son stay on my coverage, and then not be denied coverage when he’s older are huge wins for us. Until the ACA, my wife and I laid awake at night worrying about that future.

This ruling adds even more urgency to the Congressional races. If I am not mistaken the fact that SCOTUS is calling this a “tax” means that it can be overturned by a GOP House and Senate in reconciliation with only 51 votes.

Am I wrong?

AB, I feel relieved mostly. This is a big deal for my family. I was nearly in tears this morning, which surprised me.

I never thought I’d be so happy about being able to keep the half-loaf that is the ACA.

Just shows you that every win for average Americans no matter how small or imperfect should be appreciated, protected and fought for.

Ad, its either going to be upheld 6-3 like you said, or the mandate is thrown out and the fine is upheld. I cynically lean toward the latter because that is the SCOTUS “out” card. They can simply say that “of course the ACA is fine. The tax penalty is fine, just tax everyone to get the ACA funded”.

This incredibly cynical and political finding would be right up the alley of this kangaroo court.

Bito, of course they would. In the poll were other questions that were very informative. “Fear” questions about govt. overreach, being forced to change doctors, and quality of care.

The questions though specifically asked if these individual components should be kept or discarded.

When an overwhelming majority likes the stuff in it, but not the funding mechanism I can only draw one conclusion.

I know this has been said before, but as I wait in agony for tomorrow, thought I would post it again.

This is the crux of the problem with the ACA and voters:

From NYTimes/CBS Poll March -2012

Do you approve/disapprove of the following:

1. The ban on pre-existing conditions

Approve: 85% Disapprove: 12%

2. Allowing children to stay on paren’t policies unti age 26?

Approve: 68% Disapprove: 26%

3. Keep Senior prescription drug discounts?

Approve: 77% Disapprove: 16%

4. Keep individual mandate?

Approve: 45% Disapprove 54%

And there are other polls very similar to this one. In a nutshell, Americans love what the ACA does, they simply don’t like having to pay for it.

Which is consistent with the training Americans have been getting from the GOP and to a lesser degree, Democrats for the last 30 years.

You can live like socialists and be taxed like libertarians and nothing bad will ever happen.
