It’s obvious you put a lot of effort into it. Reading this I was struck how many momentous life/earth/society changing events occured this year. Then I thought “Yeah, but I probably think that every year”. So I dug up an old copy of Time’s Year in Review from 2006. What were the big doins that year? 1. Middle Atlantic state flooding 2. Rousting settlers out of the West Bank 3. The Lebanese conflict between Isreal and Hezbollah 4. The Indonesia earthquake and tsunami (okay that was big) 5. A head-butt in the World Cup 6. Phil Mickleson blowing the US Open 7. The coal mine disaster 8. The Dems taking back Congress Not bad, but all in all it can’t hold a candle to this year. I DO thing the DC GOP is horrified not only with the idea of a Gingrich Presidency, but actually having to figure out how to work with him for 4 years. Not an easy task if past history holds. BUT, to Ad’s point, Gingrich has already won the Murdoch primary. I see little indication that FOX wouldn’t be perfectly pleased with a Gingrich candidacy. In Britain, Tony Blair and David Cameron both won the Murdoch Primary, and his support helped push them over the top. Unless Gingrich shoots himself in the foot with his mouth (my suspicion) I think he may be able to overcome the hurdles placed in his path. Politically and structurally, the stars are aligned for him to move through to the general, but Newt himself, as always, is the wildcard in the equation. I simply do not think he will be able to stand up under extremely close examination without imploding. To Ad’s points, I agree with them. But the human element in the equation makes the ENTIRE process far more unpredictable. Just ask high-flyer Herman Cain, or for that matter Hillary Clinton. She was reeling in the primaries in 2008, and a rare unguarded show of emotion in New Hampshire gave her a big boost going into the next few contests. The debt ceiling debacle really pissed me off for one reason: 75% of our debt is owned by the citizens of the country. When the GOP risks default, they risk not paying us back.
