Having standards and not suffering fools is simply the product of having earned your right to that. If you were 20, we might have to smack you for self righteousness, but as an adult, you have the right – especially in your social life – to pick and choose. You EARNED that! I was raised in a liberal household (dysfunctional but liberal) but in a VERY conservative town, so I learned very early that yes, conservatives can be wonderful people, but they still have lousy political judgement. I interact regularly with religious conservatives, and I like many of them. But it’s a chore to be forever polite in the face of some of what they believe. And I won’t tolerate those who are not equally polite to me! So don’t beat yourself up or demean your standards. You’ve already proven your ability to be kind in the face of disagreement, and there is NO reason for you to willingly put yourself in the company of people with whom you have nothing in common. What part of NO CREDIT TO YOU, SUCKER do people not get? Gold standard money is short supply money, and we all would be without credit were we to return to that standard. It is possible to have responsible monetary policy without strangling the average person. What we DO need to do is remove the currency markets – won’t happen easily, but currency cannot be both a medium of exchange AND a speculative commodity. Nations need to set their standards and not wonder day to day, week to week whether they are exporters or, as in 1980, so overvalued NO ONE would buy US goods.
