Just as I love broccoli and related things but not cauliflower. At least not until now. You could make a fortune getting unpalatable things to taste good. But I’ll give you a REAL challenge – Swedes. AKA rutabaga. Nothing that I can think of could make those taste good – especially when they’re let to grow really large as horse and cattle feed and move from the merely icky rutabaga to the impossibly awful swede. With these two challenges – kale and swedes – you are definitely going to be up nights trying to find good things to do with horrid food. I also don’t like cooked turnips, but RAW ones are amazingly good. Try them – they have a lovely flavor and crispness. The Catholic ones with the body on the cross do not work at all for me – it IS the focus on the “Passion” of the Christ, the death and suffering, and I dislike it. Crosses tend to mean different things to different people, so if the whole thing creeps you out, no problem. They were a pre-Jesus and post-Jesus form of horrific execution, yes, state sanctioned murder coupled with torture, and no, you have no need to be reverential if that is how it seems to you. But for those for whom it’s a symbol of hope and an art form of beauty, it simply is different. It’s not denial, just different. And there is no litmus test, no pop quiz, no standard at all. Thank you. I used to do museum planning and interpretation, and “telling the story” is never without political dimension. A sit-down strike museum in Flint? Mangement descendants will holler. Tenament museum in NYC? “Glorifies” immigrants and their squalor. Someone is sure to object to something. Blackside Productions did a now-inaccessible series on PBS on the Great Depresssion. I thought it was beyond wonderful with film clips and stories rarely heard. One segment was on the Little Steel Strike of 1937 and the Memorial Day Massacre outside the southside Chicago Republic Steel plant. There were interviews with survivors and with Tom Girdler, Jr., the son of the CEO who ordered the police and sanctioned the shootings of unarmed people. Girdler’s defense of the action was important – his father saw the people, having a picnic before WALKING over to the mill to picket, as dangerous radicals who were sub-human and a threat to capitalism. A disgusting justification to be sure – but it was their view that led to their actions. We need to know it. We NEED to understand that all history is relevative – “truth” begins and ends where you stand, what you value, what you defend. We also need to tell ALL the stories so that the web of events finally becomes clear. Southern history of the Confederacy seems to me always and forever to be built more on fantasy than substance. Tenth Amendment issues were over slavery only, as you clearly note. The defense of owning people is very British in origin since Latin slavery was vastly different. When the Brits began the slave trade quite late in history, they could justify it ONLY by dehumanizing Black people, basing that defense on specious Biblical grounds. (My own Missouri grandfather’s Bible from 1901 continued to justify slavery of Black people as punishment for their being the ones who gave accommodation to Ham, the sinner.) This view of innate sin made sure that, in their own minds, slaves were fit to be merely property. I’ve mentioned this before but would strongly suggest Stephanie McCurry’s “Confederate Reckoning” as the most useful corrective to the romantic foolishness of most pro-Confederate views. The almost universal conscription of NON slave owning men and the utter and callous abuses of their wives, families, and property led to a women’s revolt against the Confederacy that cannot sustain the myths. Anyone whose ancestors fought but were without slaves were exploited. Period. People who fail to understand the class nature of the Confederacy and to extol their forefathers’ participation when their female relatives and family fortunes were gutted by the planter class, are simply living in a fool’s paradise. The story is ugly – about as ugly as it gets – and the vast majority of participants were deeply exploited right along with the slaves. Sherman marched through Georgia and left huge destruction – but the planter class moved through the entire South and grabbed all they could for themselves. That’s the REAL history of the Confederacy, and it changes forever the romance of rebellion into a deep and fearful exploitation of both slaves and poor whites.
