With almost anything else you get warnings. Not earthquakes, at least not sufficiently in time. Once ages ago I was awakened at 2:00 am by birds screaming in the nearby trees. I thought, “Oh no – we’re going to have a quake!” and we did, also a 5.5. But it was about 30 seconds ahead that the birds knew it, so what could we have done? Nothing. I grew up in Tornado Alley, and we had sirens. Now there are sirens along the CA coast for tsunamis. Hurricanes are pretty predictable, too. Floods as well. But earthquakes? Not at all. Only other thing that fast and unknown would be avalanches, but I intend for the rest of my days never to live at the base of a mountain. Stay safe, dear Kalima. She was a legal resident due to family links, but probably did not have employment status since the agency she worked for did not care. Anyway, I loved her and her great kindness to my very disabled father. She had fled an abusive husband. I’m quite sure she is a Christian, and most of her family likely was as well. I don’t know if her village was part of the horror, but I cannot help fearing her family members may have died – been butchered. When it comes home via someone you know, it cannot be ignored. It’s not, for me, a “distant” event but something that may have touched someone who was kind to my father, to me, to my family. I’m not sure what we, as a nation, can or should do about it, but for those who have ties to the Muslim community, please contact them and aske THEM to help direct actions to end these horrific acts. Their influence is far superior to our national one. This assault on Nigerian people simply must end – the life of one brave refugee living here may well have been altered for all time by this.
