CA has a similar resolution, AJR 22 that passed the Assembly and is in the Senate. Anyone wanting more info, ask me. It is to move the Congress to create and pass a Constitutional Amendment overturning the notion that “corporations are people, my friend.”

I believe Chuck Colson had a conversion experience as much as I believe pigs can fly. He, like several of the top god-dogs I know personally, quite cynically glommed onto this as a huge money maker and fame driver. He believed in NOTHING other than his own self.

He’s dead. I’m with Mark Twain on this one. I will not attend the funeral but shall send a letter saying I approve.

Prisoners in America deserve a whole lot more and better than being pawns in the Dominionist game. Colson’s demise won’t end the prison “ministry” he started, but it should slow it down some.

I smell politics here! If ever we needed evidence that this particular Mormon has sworn fealty to Dominionism and its agenda, this would be it. Far better, Mr. Falwell, Jr., to recruit a cult leader of your ilk than a different KIND of Christian who believes in social justice. Yeah – your students would be rebelling against the President, too…but at least you’d be building REAL ecumenism.

KT and I have had this conversation about the global Christian shift to polytheism. I find it interesting that the Religious Right actually believes there is more than one god. There’s is the “true one” and all others are false. What ever happened to “my vision of god” or some such – falling headlong into polytheistic practice does NOT bode well for the Right’s endurance.

Overall, however, I find this very funny and wish the students well in their uprising against this Chancellor, the product of tired loins…

Well, actually, low-income, working poor, disabled, and elderly poor DO have lobbyists – but we’re seriously underpaid, and are in NO position to dole out goodies to Congress.

This is where voices matter. When my organization’s members get going, we can win almost anything, even beating the big guys. The problem is – too many issues, not enough time. The energy it takes to get organized on every damn thing is hard to muster. It’s sooooo much easier to put $$$ in campaign coffers or pony up tickets to some faux charity do. But never EVER underestimate the power of organized citizens. It is the equal of money every damn time.

It’s the same logic that anti-abortion women apply when they suddenly find themselves needing an abortion: Oh, I’m not like ALL THOSE OTHERS. They’re sluts. *I* have values and an important life.

Not that easy. I’ve spent years being asked to ID anti-abortion people from security videos and cannot. Between hoodies – yes HOODIES – and other disguises, bad lighting, and grainy video (not to mention vandalism OF the cameras) it’s very difficult to catch anyone even when they come again and again. Best security is a police presence, and it varies city to city, state to state. And one security person died in the Birminham, AL bombing in 1998.

Honestly – I’ve done it all. These people change their ID, swap names, and no one who is arrested on minor charges that later may become BIG charges is entirely identifiable. They are itinerate, crafty, and have an underground network. We share info across the country – and discovered that someone with one name in VA is known to others in CA by an entirely different ID. Unless you catch ’em in the act, very little can be done. Same with every other extremist group. A state police office once told me that he thought these anti-abortion underground folks were operating EXACTLY as Al Qae’da does.

It’s not that easy. They are that good.

You cannot imagine the sigh of relief I felt when it turned out to be one of their former students. If ANYONE on the secular left or NON-Dominionist religious community DARES to harm people in the conservative Right faith community, it will be all over. The one thing we have going for us is our temperate actions against those with whom we disagree. I did not want this incident to tip the scales of civil war. So far, so good.

BTW – REALLY religious organizations are totally exempt from even being OFFERED contraception. Only religiously sponsored ones (hospitals, universities, charities) that are public, open to all, and that TAKE OUR FREAKING TAX MONEY fall under the equall access laws of the Civil Rights Act.

Sorry – can’t take our money AND deprive us of our right to our own values.

Sue – it’s not a good idea to do EXACTLY the same article, but nothing says you can’t rewrite it with the same topic. The universe of readers is fairly discrete, so it has more bang if you revise it and post it from a different point of argument or use different bits of evidence, whatever. It makes the same point in fresh ways. It’s the same with Letter to the Editor or Op Eds – they can be REPRINTED with attribution. (So if you want to do something at GOP and PPOV, see if you can do it as a “reprint”? That’s up to bito and the “editorial board” of PPOV.)

But I’d really emphasize redoing it with some of the points you may have left out, shorter, longer – just singular. It spreads your insight much further. See what bito says, but I’d advise putting in the work to make something different.

KT – the only institutions that are religiously sponsored but that fall under the rule are those that have come under the civil rights laws for public access. They are not religious organizations at ALL but are simply sponsored by religious entities. AND the important aspect is – they take our TAX money to perform their operations. That’s why they come under the public accommodations laws of the civil rights law. Churches and other purely religious organizations ARE exempt.

You can’t have it both ways – practice your religion AND take our money.

And if you don’t have insurance, you can’t even see a doc without a lot of help from PP or a handful of other clinics. Not everyone has access. It’s HUGELY expensive with no generic equivalents I can find even though they are referenced.

What is the “bam” that came up? That’s usually what gets said when a woman has become impregnated – “Bam! You’re PG!”

Well, I heard the numbers and was glad I’d not played. Those were not numbers I’d have picked. I got one scratch-off card as a birthday present. Didn’t win. I’m not lucky that way.

But if I HAD won and netted over $300 million, I’d have set up a foundation and funded all the left groups that don’t have funds but that are doing good things. Trusts so they could use the proceeds. That includes my organization that is teetering on going out of business regularly. Then I’d work for free and hire someone to do the things I’m sick of doing but that remain interesting to someone new to the game.

And I would NOT fund all the lefty pretenders who suck the life out of the room whenever they bully their way onto the scene! I’m with YOU Cher – PPOV would make AOLHP look like a throwaway birdcage liner. We’d ROCK!!!

And I would give a handful of friends whose commitment to justice has cost them economically each a life trust with income sufficient to ease their way. One of them has 9 dogs and 15 cats in a one room house. (It’s immaculate – she’s not weird or a hoarder, just a rescuer.) I’d build her an addition with 2 bedrooms and upgrade the plumbing.

And then I’d buy REALLY good shoes. Just a couple of pairs. Because the one thing I learned lobbying? No such thing as truly comfortable shoes. At least not in my current price range.

So that would be my dream.

I thought they let him go at the scene until I read today that the lead detective wanted him arrested for manslaughter since he did not believe “stand your ground” pertained. The detective was ordered by the DA to end the inquiry and free Zimmerman.

Zimmerman’s “witness” claims the “guy in the red” was on top of the other guy, and rumor has had it that the one in red was Trayvon. But his hoodie was NOT red. Z’s jacket is.

If, as Z. claims, Trayvon was beating him, bloodied his nose, bashed his head on the ground and that Z was UNDER Trayvon – then Z must have shot Trayvon while Trayvon was on top of Z – so where is TRAYVON’s blood? It would be all over Zimmerman’s clothes. And no marks on Zimmerman at all – no bruises, no cut head, no bloody nose as he now claims.

Sorry – police tapes can be doctored. This is not to Zimmerman’s defense one iota. So it’s likely the real deal. Incredible.

Yeah – with the exemption IN PLACE for family farms, WTF are these Dems thinking? Protecting kids from dangerous jobs conditions is as old as the turn of the LAST century! If they can’t justify that to their electorate, they aren’t trying.

Thank you, escat! I knew about the “pre-existing uninsurance and proof” but thought the article was wrong about ANOTHER wait. I’ve heard (not proven) that some people did not have to wait the full six months if they had COBRA and a serious problem AND got a notice of rejection before leaving COBRA. Cannot confirm that.

I’m so glad you’re in the pool! I keep sending people there, and it seems to work for them! Others get Medi-Cal and CHIP. We need a way to get the word out – then articles such as today’s would not confuse the matter.

I have a question for you since you’d told us you got assistance via the High Risk Pool. Did you have limits on coverage at the beginning? There is an article in the Sac Bee that says not only do you have to be without insurance for 6 months but that there is another 6 month delay in covering your pre-existing condition. Any knowledge of that or comments?

As for Cheney’s black, oily heart – that apparently has not functioned at all for 21 months. And no one noticed.

Fascinating man. I guess, growing up in Illinois, I heard his name but nothing about him really. I, daughter of Dem Unitarians, lived in an intensely-Christian town. Not a good fit. That being the case, it stands to reason I’d not have been taught about him in IL history! Rebel! Apostate! Heathen!

Oh, well. Wasn’t taught evolution either. That came in after I graduated from high school. My biology teacher was pleased since he WANTED to teach it. I bet it’s out again…

Thanks for the insights. I will try to find him. What interests me about this as one working for a “Christian” (Protestant) organization is that despite the drumbeat from the right, more and more Protestants are moving Ingersoll’s direction – understanding the breadth of philosophies and beliefs that share common ideas is taking over. And that, of course, drives the religious right to frenzy and has them declare our denominations to be “not Christian”. Well OK. Who cares what they think? They aren’t “christian” either. Old Testamentarians they. Jesus is just their trump card for not going to hell (in which they fervently believe and we don’t.)

The Great Schism rides again.
