Wow – if Romney is repudiated by Stockman, someone has a big, big credibility problem! Stockman was midwife of trickle down (not the philosopher king who created it but the medium who delivered it) so Romney just lost someone who COULD have backed him up but did NOT.

Double wow! And comparing this kind of “investing” to running a brothel – thank you David. Never thought I’d think well of you.

He’s in a PUBLIC place, yelling at his constituents, and he’s telling THEM to be quiet? To leave? They don’t HAVE to leave, he has NO authority over the place.

Government did NOT create this problem, and his refusal to listen to even questions about the sequence of events is despicable. He is gross and unfit for office!

New issue about “religious freedom” arose this week for me.

A meeting of faith groups occurred Monday with the Catholics asking us to “defend” them against having contraception coverage in health care.

This part of federal health care reform applies to ONLY those groups that are religiously sponsored but that are broad-based in service and hiring, and most importantly, that take tax money to do their business. When asked about helping their non-Catholic employees with something they consider an important moral choice, the reply was market-based in nature – well, they can consider the benefit package and decline to work.

So employees get labor market considerations (in a very tough labor market) while he Catholics rely on moral ones? The dismissal of contraceptive coverage as “something they can easily get” overlooks that birth control pills cost around $1000 per year where there is not health insurance to help pay. Religious groups pay notoriously poorly – that is a huge bite out of a paycheck.

When it was pointed out that Protestants view contraception as a MORAL good – our care for creation by focusing on not over populating as well as our responsibilities to stable and self-sufficient families – the Catholics were shocked. SHOCKED! They apparently thought we were just trendy, going with a “whatever” kind of approach to social change. It never occurred to them we have theologians who look at social issues and weigh and balance ethics and morality in our decisions about what to support. One Catholic spokesperson said she never knew we actually HAD a theological stand on this issue. Duh.

So no, we will NOT defend tax-money-receiving organizations from offering the SAME insurance that everyone else will have to offer unless they are specifically religious NON tax-money receiving institutions.

The religiously-sponsored universitites, charities, hospitals that receive tax support have a choice – they can self fund. Then they can employ only their own people and become propagators of their faith by also limiting services. One up side – it might slow the relentless acquisition of public hospitals by Catholic ones that then limit the scope of services (no tubal ligations, no reproductive care outside of their limits) for a broad public. Sometimes it’s the only hospital in town and therefore with serious consequences. Public officials would be unable to justify the sale to Catholic hospitals and would have to find ways to keep the hospital open for all people.

But at the bottom line – we will defend the Catholics “right” to do whatever they wish, but not on our money, not at our expense. We will defend their “right” to offer benefits to NON Catholics if and only if they can tell us how this is not at the expense of OUR religious rights.

This would all be easier to swallow if it were not for the fact that in at least two different states the Catholic systems had not already, without ANY government involvement, provided both contraceptive coverage to non-Catholic employees and emergency contraception to victims of sexual assault. I know that for a fact. The narrowing of respect for religious rights of non-Catholics is therefore NOT something I can defend because it all represents a RETREAT from respect for diversity and other people’s rights. It also represents a massive dislocation about who HAS rights.

With respect to contraception, Bishops used to tell their members that so long as they considered the church’s teachings in the fullness of their implications, if they found those teachings seriously at odds with the members’ conscience, they could proceed with their personal decisions without sin. That view has been dropped along, apparently, with ANY concern for anyone else’s moral vision and choices based on that theological and personal consideration of ethics.

Does that mean the entire world has to acceed to the US Conference of Bishops narrowing of world view? Why is what they said 30 years ago LESS relevant today than what they impose now? Were those older bishops less righteous than the current ones?

I will no longer support someone else’s “moral necessities and religous rights” that come at the EXPENSE of other people’s including my members. Either we return to the mutual respect we have had in the very recent past or we begin the next Holy War. It’s THEIR call.

I heard this on NPR, and one guy brought it down to 5th grade. I give him credit though – when he found out he’d set a new low, he said his mother would be embarrassed. At least he GOT it. Kinda raise the bar again with that admission.

I know children smarter than these doofuses. I’d put a couple of 5-year-olds up against Louie Gomert any day of the week!

BTW – one of the plants I followed through shutdown gave up over 22,000 jobs. It was profitable – save on the cooked books. It all started in 1977 when the company hired for its CEO a man with NO steel background but a financial one. He cannibalized the plant for the write down. He cooked the books putting debt on it for taking in raw materials bound for several other plants but debited to this one, and rolling goods at this plant but crediting it to another. Any plant can look bad if you lie about it. In 1983 the whole thing closed and has been mostly torn down. Five miles of productive capital, gone. All those families. All those lives. Wasted. For NOTHING. Now the company is gone, and taxpayers pick up the pensions and no one has anything but Medicare.

Oh wow – where? I spent twenty years documenting steel plants, both operating and shut down. Worked with USW folks and wrote a book about one plant and why it shut – no reason at all. USW like most union folks are the best people I know. When it became clear that they and the work they did was “insufficiently profitable” for the finance capitalists, it was the beginning of the end. How and why anyone thought that the industry and the middle class it supported were expendable I will NEVER understand. Salt of the earth, steelworkers. The created real value, not just fragile paper riches. My hat’s off to your father, KT. He built America.

Maybe it is, but I’ve been reading that similar things are now available almost as toys for the private individual who has everything else.

I know Elgin. It’s a nothingburger of a town anymore (heavily de-industrialized, even their once-famous Elgin watches are now made in China under some other name.) If you think of the Roseanne show, the original, that’s more or less where it was set. Blue collar, not much happening economically. Once helped a friend but a bridesmaid’s dress there – pathetic shop with tired clothes, and this was YEARS ago.

So I can see NO reason for the gubbmint to fly drones, but I can see a reason why some Bubba might. Yeah – even Illinois has Bubbas, guys who sell used cars, and have way more money than good sense.

So I’d not lose sleep over it, is all I’m saying.

Sigh. Because my organization is profoundly supportive of GLBT rights, I get these RWNJ’s letters about once a month, sometimes more.

Y’all think she’s disjointed? Compared to the letters – usually a MINIMUM of 10 densely written, edge-to-edge and occasionally AROUND the edges handwritten scrawl – she is a paragon of precision.

The letter usually have densely packed Bible verses of no known or discernible relevance to anything at all, much less the screed being committed to paper by the author. There are often post-it notes for things forgotten in the verbiage. There are photos of, well, we’re never quite sure what.

We read them. More precisely I read them. Why? Looking for threats. Must say they don’t hurl them at us directly. But we are quite clear that we’re bound for perdition because we think GLBT people are people and that if you begin with the premise that we are all God’s people, or, secularly, we are all equal, carving off a hunk of humanity as being unworthy kinda undermines the term “all”.

We don’t bother to reply. Once we’ve determined that there are no actionable items in the screed, they go into recycling. At least we are comforted knowing these letters make great compost.

So this wingnut is nothing compared to OUR wingnuts and goobers and RWNJs and Religious Extremists. I don’t want to sit down with her, but she was pretty modest in her descriptions compared to some.

She and our letter writers inexorably lead me to one question – what’s up with straight (supposedly) people being obsessed with other people’s sex lives?

Does make one wonder…

Suddenly we have The Stormfront cruising in Sacramento. David Lynch, recently murdered here, kicked it off again, but we have been told by SPLC that they are growing in and around us without David’s loving guidance. (Snark!)

It gets creepier by the minute what with people buying ammo to be prepared if Obama is re-elected.

Hey – they went through this with Clinton and nothing happened to their blue-eyed dreams. Why do they cling to the fears when the reality is – THEY are the ones doing the killing?

Tonight on PBS Evening News, Brooks and Shields said this announcement by PBO might hurt him in the swing states. I think by November, no one will care outside of the extremists for whom putting down other people’s rights is all they do care about.

Then they said no one will think much about Mitt’s high school incident, that he has a great reputation in the business world as a nice person.

Oh? Laughing about shutting plants, moving jobs away to othe states, saying he LOVES to fire people who provide him services, tormenting his dog, and sneering at unions and ALL working people would seem very clearly to be his adult “socially acceptable” means of being a public bully and coming away without receiving a collective wedgie or outright thumping from his victims. He IS a bully – a very nasty one who hides his nastiness under a veneer of respectability. Sorry – I think the REAL Mitt is a sociopath and a sadist, and the evidence of a pattern is very clear.

Can’t pick Christie – Christie has legal problems of MAJOR impact.

Can’t pick Huckabee – he’d outshine and out-maneuver Mitt.

Can’t pick Newt – there is not enough oxygen in the world for those two to be in the same room.

Daniels said no.

That leaves Pawlenty who is sort of mini-Mitt and thus no balance on the ticket.

I say he should do something daring and pick Sarah or Michelle just for the fun we’d all have with it! Of course I’m NOT sure Michelle is qualified to run now she’s a dual Swiss-US citizen. I know our Constitution says no one in office shall accept status from foreign nations, and gosh darnit – I bet that includes citizenship.
