You had to be permanently IN Madison, have your drivers’ license and other residential info there. A lot of students did vote from home or by absentee – but the election was during break, and lots of young people fell through the cracks, especially those who could vote at school in 2008 but now cannot. So the stinkbomb named Walker DID have that impact, and there is disengagement of too many – that is a factor as well, yes. One of the most pernicious things that has happened 2008 to now is the snotty disregard young people have for voting when it’s not “all about them”. I heard a Peace and Freedom party member say he probably won’t vote at all in the General because his party – all few thousand of them – did not win anything on the new CA “top two never mind who” election yesterday. In the primary the top two can be of the same party, but it does lock out small party candidates in the General. So if it’s not about HIM and his ideals, there is no reason for him to vote at all, in his fervid brain. I’ve never been able to reconcile those two things, but there you are. I dimly remember the very end of the McCarthy years, years of oppression and viciousness this younger generation would never understand. And yet we ended that, McCarthy slid into disrepute and slunk off into obscurity, HUAC-House UnAmerican Activities Committee – was abolished, and we moved forward fighting successfully for human and civil rights upon which we stand today. Those were profoundly anti-union times as well – the Taft-Hartley Act undid many of the gains labor made during the Depression and WW II. It was also a period of massively conservative religious pounding of Americans’ beliefs – the time when “under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance to “counteract” commie influences in America. There are always set backs because we on the liberal side too often relax our vigilance on behalf of democracy, and today the forces on the Right are very similar to those we had to challenge in the ’50s and early 60s. Walker’s win is, for him, a brief victory since he WILL be indicted and likely convicted, and the Lt. Gov. is so absurd that I think people will come to their senses as the state continues to collapse. The people who elected McCarthy came to despise him as they will Walker. Vereides, the founder of The Family (aka The Fellowship) back in 1936 was rabidly anti-labor, hated poor people, thought the Apostles were “businessmen” and allied himself immediately with the same people who’d attempted the coup against FDR in 1935 to promote businessmen as the Elect. And Vereides was a conservative Methodist minister. He also founded Goodwill Industries, so you might wanna donate elsewhere…they have had some scandals about how they do not do trainings anymore but take your stuff, sell it, and keep the money.
