MY objection was the belief, wrong, that “Geronimo” was the code name for bin Laden thus reinforcing the white stereotypes about Indian-as-predator-to-poor-white-people. When I discovered it was the code for the ACTION, it really DID change things. That was kind of cool. Right up there with jumping out of planes and cannonballing into the water. That said, ONLY Indians get to say what’s important on issues for and about Indians. But to many of us it felt like another way for the Baggers to take on yet another public racial and cultural hate, and that was NOT something we wanted to contemplate. Isolation of someone with special circumstances (you’ve turned state’s evidence, are high profile, etc.) is the norm for the prisoner’s own safety. It takes several months for the prisoner to be moved into a less confined area with others of the same status. The hue and cry over Manning’s being “tortured” due to these conditions is just plain wrong. He was not being tortured nor are any of those who are segregated to keep them away from the general populations who are a high risk their safety.
