Time Out for O/T – Vol. 15

Did you see the POV program, “Battle of the Flags” about what I thought was East Columbus? Damn near broke my heart – the story of the woman whose house looked like that but was all she had of her family. The whole story was heart breaking. Used to do historic preservation documentation and love old houses, but I had NO sympathy for the gentrifiers and their sneering disdain of the people already IN the neighborhood. If you know it, what’s the follow up? Has any kind of balance occurred? I hope the yuppies have NOT driven out the people who lived there for years. Sigh.

Man – that PROVES it. Ties between the corporate and religious worlds. There once was a virulent anti-abortion group that called itself the Victim Souls of the Unborn Christ Child or V-SUCC. We must just have missed how they got funded…clearly the Kochs have moved on to control those grown up fetuses?

While this is as blatant as anything I’ve ever seen, it’s by NO means unheard of. There is no college or university that is free from corporate meddling in hiring, firing, tenure, promotion. It’s just usually more subtle. I have been horrified at the degree of corporate influence for thirty years now. It’s getting more blatant, but it’s NOT new. Why in the world do you think we’re so DUMB?

The GOPBaggers miscalculated the election “victory” – it was very broad but incredibly shallow. A lot of Obama supporters in 2008 sat it out in 2010, and even more people were just peeved and voted GOP because the Dems did not immediately fix the economy. So the support was fragile – and fortunately, the GOPBaggers misread the temper of the populace and brought out their HUGELY unpopular programs thinking all was well. It is NOT. I think a lot of those folks are going to be one-term people. Has-beens long before they ever “was”.

In hre book “Nickled and Dimed” Barbara Ehrenrich noted how when she worked at Denny’s in the South, huge tables of religious zealots would have Sunday breakfast and leave her $1 for the whole table. That is the kind of selfish narcissistic mentality of the Right.

Tips are supposed to be for outstanding service, but because petty cheapo service laws permit lower wages for service providers, it now is essential. Can’t afford to tip 15%? Don’t eat out. If you can afford to eat out, don’t whine about helping your server live a decent life.

kes – I understand your friend’s feelings. I never fit in with the locals at all, even though my grandmother had been born and raised in Memphis. (I did NOT tell anyone she was the daughter of a carpetbagger. Things were bad enough, thank you.) TN has some very progressive parts – Knoxville, Sewanee, some places in Nashville and Memphis – but overall it’s not yet moved into the 20th century.

The geography has something to do with it as is true in all of Appalachia – “hollers” tend to isolate, and isolated people tend not to be comfortable with outsiders, new ideas, ways of life different from theirs. The town in which I lived was about 14000 people – and it had over 100 churches, splinters of splinters, some so poor they still had pot bellied stoves and no central heat. They were scared people – their way of life was under assault, and they dug in, prepared to stave off us Yankees yet again.

And they did.

Khirad would rule benevolently, of that I have no doubt. He’d not dispense gold but would assure equity among all his people. Of that I also have no doubt. Khiradabad would be a model place to live.

It was SOLID. He did that so well! He gave enough insights, especially about the gleaning of the tiny bits of intelligence info, to make clear to anyone who is not wearing a tinfoil hat that this was done CAREFULLY and with recent, not antiquated, information. IOW – no torture info was used in the finding of this man. I like his measured responses about his anxiety and the care he had for the people whom he’d sent.

Well done, Mr. President. Well done.

bito – I’m not sure No. 3 is a myth. Al Qae’da’s view of Islam has about as much relevance to Islam as the Dominionists do to Christianity. There is the use of the basic tenets but in such a distorted way as to be almost incomprehensible to the majority of believers. Even his Wahabbism is unrecognizable to most followers of the Wahabbi mindset. Roll-your-own religion often comes to a bad end.

Oh kes – that would be wonderful! How funny! Yup – is you ain’t Pentecostal, you ain’t shit. (Think of the obverse and…) That would be mind boggling!

I lived in TN for a couple of years and went one semester to Middle TN State University in Murfreesboro. Had two outstanding classes and a third that was taught by someone I think was out of the Stone Age. It was an eye-opening experience to live there, some of it good but a LOT of it pretty awful. When the doofus quotient hit the roof in the state legislature, I was NOT surprised. There was a whole lotta weird there. There were a lot of just plain mean people in the small town where I lived. Too bad, because otherwise it was a really pretty state.

If it’s been the vision since at least 1999, don’t you think they’d get BORED?

I’m just surprised there are no renewed flame outs over “secret UN white buses” and “secret martial law signs” the way they’ve done before. You’d think by now Michelle Bachmann would have aerial views of the “re-education camps” where Obama is putting us all.

If I’m going to get up a good paranoid delusion, I’d REALLY like better visuals like last time. This is just boring. Kind of like Edmund Rice Day.

So THAT’s where the Y2K/Clinton-will-declare-martial-law survival supplies went! You might want to check for weevils…though they probably maintain it’s extra protein.

A cop friend of mine went to the Y2K survivalist show outside Chicago in Fall 1999. He did wonder why, if the world was coming to an end, they were taking credit cards?

There’s them what believes. Then there is them what exploits them what believes. I think Brian Frank has found the motherlode of the latter.
